Bear, I have just received an identical comment. I still believe mine to be a good example of shallow depth of field - but the comment did make me begin to doubt myself; this is the only comment I have received so far, perhaps after voting is over I may elicit some more opinions. My score had slowly been creeping up from a very poor start, and had reached the heady heights of 5.47, only to be reduced to 5.36 in one single vote. Ah well. |

There are way to many photo's in this challange where the depth of field is too shallow, hence making the photo either uninteresting (or simply bad).
I think the secret to good shallow DOF, is to make the main subject of the photo stand out from the rest of the photo. This subject could be a bee on a flower, or a truck on a freeway....but then again, I could just be talking rubbish |

Only my 8th or 9th entry -- in aggregate, not all up for votes or voted yet -- but it appears from my year and a half of lurking and active participation the past month that there are faaaaar too many people with cameras who can take photos but who aren't necessarily knowledgable of anything beyond basic photography -- e.g. concepts such as Shallow DOF or Minimalism. That really kills any correlation between votes cast, low and high I suppose, and an image's quality or applicability to a theme.
It's one thing to vote down [true] DNMCs or images suffering legit technical deficiencies. However, to interject a level of subjectivity on things one doesn't really know or understand is just defeatist.
