Anyone out there tried the upgrade to the new Windows Vista?
I tried tonight, and although my system easily meets all the minimum requirements Vista terminated the install due to an error. No clue as to what the error might be, just roll-back.
Bummer!!

I'm still a little standoffish on Vista. I will not install it on my current machine. I'd have to upgrade the video card, the rest is supposedly compatible. I'll build another box sometime after mid-year and that may run Vista, depending on what I hear between now and then.
I just attended a 4-hour Microsoft Launch Event today (what a zoo!) and honestly there are a lot of very nice things in Vista. Watch and wait is my strategy for now.
Oh yeh, I attended the Launch Event because they gave out a free copy of Office 2007 Professional :-) |

I signed up for one of the developer ones--which one did you go to? Was it all day? I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone: go to something interesting, and get a free copy of Office. Hope I'm not disappointed! Mine's only a half day though. Hope I don't get half a copy of Office!

I just went to the one here in Louisville today and have a copy of Office 2007 Pro and Office Groove 2007.
Personally I'd never buy an "upgrade" I will only get full version and do a clean install. |

Ditto! Operating System upgrades are an invitation to disaster.
And I am a reformed early adopter in all things technical. It's taken awhile to get over paying 3 times what I should for hardware and having 10 times as many unsolvable issues with new software, but I take it one day at a time. :) |

Yeah, I wondered what that was also. I just assumed it's a collection of 60's oldies MP3 files that comes with office and allows you to assign them to events like "Fatal Error!" and such. :) |

it's tunes to dance to while you wait for vista to boot up. you can squeeze in 6, maybe 7 songs first thing in the morning. |

ROTFLMAO!
@nshapiro: Neil, the one I went to was a half-day, and it was the "developer" track. I figured they would get into more of the nuts & bolts on that track than some of the others. Honestly, there was not that much to take away. It was good to watch some reasonably realistic demos of business-related applications of Vista, Office, SharePoint, etc.; also interesting to watch as the speaker actually created a small app using XAML. All in all, glad I went. Can't argue with Office 2007 for free. |

Luddite, eh? I've got you beat. Before installing the 2007 Beta a few months ago, I was still running Office 97... talk about getting your money's worth! |

Haw!
Clippy was banished long ago, along with that horrid "FindFast" and the potentially embarrassing "Fast Save" option. :-) |

Wait, you mean you guys are not running 98 any more?
I think this Vista thing is going to scare people back to apple. I will use it because I have to keep up on what is new, but I am not real excited about it. I guess we will just have to see. |

I don't get that impression. As long as Microsoft retracts some of the garbage that was in the original Vista EULA, and the system is as stable as promised (I believe it will be) it should be a success. |

This was listed as a major reason you should get Vista Ultimate on the microsoft site.
"Windows Hold̢۪em, a poker game for players of all skill levels"
Wow I think I will go drop 4 bills for that...lol |

Microsoft success is with Manufactured PC's not with upgrades. IOW it's already guaranteed. |

Ya, I will be using Vista before you know it. That is for sure. I just don'y see anything that it offers besides 64 bit support that would be an improvement over xp though. All I do is work in photoshop, and use my firefox browser. I guess I don't get the hefty price tag.
You do get these fine features in the new Vista as well, so that is good:
"Windows DVD Maker, HD support for Windows Movie Maker, Chess Titans, and Mahjong Titans are available in Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate."
If they would have bundled "Ski" with it, then I might have bought it today!

During the presentation we attended Vista was very slow, crashed once, and wouldn't let them do a couple of security things they promised it could do. I'm not overly impressed. They did try to give a OS X feeling to it but being a Mac user, they failed.
Office 2007 though is very nice. I have a free copy but will have to break out the Toshiba to use it, I was hoping for a Mac version.
Oh and yes, Office Groove is a collaboration software.. sorry thought you'd all heard about it. I did not see any previews for it during the session I attended. I'll d/l it and burn it to cd until I hear more about what it can and can't do, what it will and will not break or crash ;-) |

"It starts with a breakthrough design that makes your PC easier to use every day. With Windows Aero, you'll experience dynamic reflections, smooth gliding animations, transparent glass-like menu bars, and the ability to switch between your open windows in a new three-dimensional layout."
Can somebody translate this for me. If I am reading it right, I am paying $400 for shinny gliding animations and transparent menu bars and the ability to switch between your open windows!
