Anyone else trying out lightzone? I have tried one image and so far I'm impressed! The only thing I don't like so far is the selections. They are a bit awkward to use. If it had a gradient based selection I'd be really swooning, because I tend to use those as layer masks and I like the way they work on landscapes.
Other issues for me (in the trial):
1) So far, I haven't been able to save anything but their format. I am presuming I can save during the trial, or I won't use it very much
2) It did crash on me once, but I see there's a newer version I haven't downloaded yet
3) I'd like to have the ability to reduce as well--then you wouldn't need PS or another utility at all.
Otherwise, on my first attempt, the shot came out pretty good! Does anyone else want to download/try and discuss? I'd love to hear some other opinions!

| This sounds pretty interesting. I like the idea of a simpler image editing program. |

And I would be thrilled to find a program that doesn't save 100-200MB PSD files. I back them to DVD but I don't like deleting them, in case I get the urge to reedit. PSD's take up so much space!
Lightzone files are (like Apple Aperture) just the settings you've applied--so they are small. So I have my original CR2 and a small <100KB lzn.

| Nice. $250 is kinda steep though. Guess I'll bookmark them and re-examine when I get back from Melbourne. |

| Just an FYI - it's free for Linux (legitimately even) |

Can you point to where you found that because I only see:
"Q. What operating systems are supported by LightZone 2.0?
A. LightZone 2.0 will run on Mac OS X (version 10.4.3 'Tiger' or later is required), or Microsoft Windows XP with service pack 2 (32-bit or x64), or Windows 2000 with service pack 4." |

I've been using it under Linux for quite a while and it works wonders... my latest challenge entry is scoring pretty decent!! :-D
I felt it was a little weird the first few times, but once you get it, the "zone" approach feels right. Furthermore, it's the only serious RAW browsing, conversion and editing tool available under Linux, AFAIK. (let me know if you know any besides ufraw)
Sure it's free for Linux, and even though not officially supported, the mailing list is quite active and Anton (the list's maintainer and one of LZ developers) is doing a great job in solving the issues which arise. and if you feel like paying for it, you can send them some money through PayPal.
Just give it a try, you'got nothing to loose... not even money!! ;-)

BIBBLE!
Edit: and here's a link to various other RAW conversion methods in Linux that I found very helpful when I was starting out with it.

free, I meant!! :P
I have installed bibble.. a few times as it expires every 15 days or so. I use ufraw and the ufraw GIMP plugin all (even Light Zone) are, one way or another, frontends to dcraw.
