I dont think they ran ads in national geographic saying dust reduction was just a gimmick...

Well, I'm sure the 40D will be one hell of a camera, but my official prediction is that lens based IS/VR is something that Canon and Nikon owners will have to accept for at least a couple more years...

image stabilizers, whatever each company likes to call it.
OIS, SR, VR, IS, etc....

hey pad partner ...

my 2 cents is at the nikon D40 ... it's designed to be a learner's camera, with training wheels!!! LOL

i know a few people who have them, and they all love the camera. they're learning about aperture, shutter speed and techniques as they shoot. the built in display actually helps understand a lot of this stuff.

to boot, the D40 is the cheapest DSLR on the market (as far as i'm aware).

i've not heard a bad word about the camera. i use a D50 and it's a great little box too! D40 couldn't go much wrong!!!
