I would SO much like to use my flash bracket and swivel headed electronic flash on my Kodak Z650 ... Is there any way to get the thing to go off even with some fancy connector wiring from the USB slot or is a slave my only option? ... I SO hate the just above the lens flash. Red eye galore and lots of other issues. Please don't tell me to buy a better camera ... I destroyed my Nikon CoolPix 8700 by accident and cannot afford better right now.

get a slave flash that gets triggered by pre-flash fires.
then hook it to your camera using those C-brackets or U-brackets.
alternatively, if you camera has a flash-sync port, even better.

What kind of flash is it. Most importantly does it have a PC plug on it? If it does, you can probably put a peanut slave on the flash and fire it that way.

I did some studio shots with my Coolpix 950 by taping a peanut to my cameras flash, using the peanut to trigger the strobes. Worked quite well.

I am confused ... this peanut slave seems to need a place to plug into the camera and that is my problem in the first place. If I had that, I would not need a slave or anything else. I could just plug the external flash into the camera ... What am I missing?

No, the peanut slave plugs into a flash and fires optically, sensing the on-camera flash.
