Get your minds out of the gutter people, this is a photography forum!

My shot from 'best of 06' was a hummer I shot back in June:

As I said in the comments, I was hoping for a higher score, but the strength of the field in best of 06 pushed me back quite a bit.

This bird, incidentally, may be the same one that starred in my "motion blur" ribboner back in July:

And here are a few more from that trip:

Well, John, yours beat the snot out of mine, by like 3/4 of a point! Like Karma, I like the last the best of the lot. I think rotating it clockwise slightly and cropping just a bit tighter could make it even better.

whenever I try and shoot birds, even at 300mm, the birds always seem so far away still. How do you get them to fill the frame so much? Are these somewhat extreme crops or are you just way more stealthy than me?

Hummingbirds can become quite tolerant of human presence with persistant exposure. Setup the feeder in a sheltered area with a table and chair nearby. Preposition the camera on a tripod for a shooting session and wait. You can easily get within 10 feet of the feeder and the colorful birds.

That is one sweet hummingbird shot John. The details and color in it are superb. FWIW, I gave it an 8. I keep meaning to hang up some feeders around my house to get some shots. Nice work there.

These are fairly severe crops, which is why I won't likely be offering (or making for myself) any prints. They were all shot with the 70-200 (at 200) from a distance of around 10 to 15 feet. This location was on a deck frequented by other guests, and I parked myself in a chair for hours at a time waiting, so they were pretty acclimated to human presence. Even more dramatic was on a previous trip to Cloudcroft NM, when outside a restaurant, there were dozens of hummers at a time competing for multiple feeders:

No kidding. That's an absolutely spot-on hummer shot. The arch of the body is beautiful, it's something we don't see every day, even in hummer pictures.
