Two Wolves
An old Cherokee chief is teaching his grandson about life:
"A fight is going on inside me,"he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil -he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, self-doubt and ego...
The other is good -he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith... This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old chief simply replied. "The one you feed."
Honestly, which wolf do you feed currently?

i let them share the same bowl
which is a flip-in-reply
to a tale good enough
not requiring an answer

I agree with ralph, you have to feed both in order to stay a balanced person. |

can you live without:
anger, envy, sorrow, regret, guilt, lies, self-doubt and ego
??
i picked these out of the whole group because i believe you would be a seriously damaged human if you didn't have them....
imagine never feeling sorrow or regret... or telling everyone the truth ALL the time

The uncontrollable ones I surely cannot live without but I can go without lies and ego. I do it everyday. Frankly, I think a person who feels that s/he needs to feed these to be whole would be considered the seriously damaged human. ;)
The more you feed the 2nd wolf, the less you have to worry with the first. |

dudephil, I think to believe you live without lies or ego is in itself a display of ego? If indeed I am wrong, then all I could do is try to emulate your life. Can you explain how you have managed to live without telling a lie? |

I would not put it exactly his way, but I agree with Megatherian! :)
DPCers tend to take a negative approach to evaluating photography.

Damaged? or enlightened? |
damaged goods / walking wounded
a person that has no guilt would very likely be a sociopath
and someone with no self-doubt .. would likely be bipolar (manic-depressive)

I can only speak for myself ... I'm the only person I know ;)

In my experience the less people you're around the more "enlightened" you become.

I have told many lies in my time and also used to walk around with the biggest ego of anyone you've probably ever known. I cut the crap and allow myself to let people see me for who I am rather than who I tried to act like. If you're true to yourself you really don't need to lie about much.
Sorry, but if being honest is egotistical I guess I can live with that.

A human being can't exist without ego. If there was no ego, you wouldn't compete, you wouldn't congratulate yourself for winning, you wouldn't be sad or upset when you lose. |

I have a feeling that we're talking about egotism rather than good ol' ego by definition, don't you?

I think the spirit of the story is true, even if the semantics of it are more complicated.
Feed the "good" in you, and it will win. Feed the "evil" in you, and it will win.
The problem becomes where you draw the line between good and evil, and where you source your values for that line.
The problem is not feeding evil, the problem is recognizing it for what it is. If you have no idea what you are, or what the underlying motives of your nature are, then how are you supposed to feed either side?
The question then, is moot, because it presupposes the content, quality, and the very existence of good and evil.
Don't question the answers, question the questions. |

I think this is a good idea. Adopt the 'I have a beer', so who cares.
Since I had cancer, my life is if I want to do it, I will. I can do it I will. I can't do it, I'll have a beer and watch some other prat do it!!
Man, so many people deny their ego, but it is what drives them. And, that clever b****r American_Horse has done this deliberately just to get this argument going. |

Sorry you had cancer and am glad to hear you're doing well.
Once again, I think where we're differing is what the OP meant by ego. If simply trying to be successful is the definition then I don't understand why it wouldn't be included in the second wolf, right? If the results you put out are better than others then there is no reason to not be happy with yourself. My definition of ego (egotistical, egomaniac, etc) is thinking you're better than someone on a human level because you are successful.
Many successful rock stars are driven by ego. Many successful humanitarians aren't.
