I am really bummed. My Nikon D70s is out of warranty by about 3 months. The built-in flash has started to go nuts. It will fire correctly about 1/2 the time. The rest of the time it either (A) doesn't fire at all or (B) fires, but doesn't do what it is supposed to. For example, I primarily use it in the commander mode to remote fire a couple of SB-600's. However, when I pop up the built in flash, it will fire correctly about twice, then it won't fire at all for a couple of frames, then it will fire, but not signal the SB-600's. I do have an SB-800 which works flawlessly for fireing the sb-600's, but sometimes I don't want to use it or I want to use all three in slave mode.

Anyone else experienced this? A google search looks like it might be a common problem. The crappy part is the fact that the warranty ended 3-months ago. What would it cost to have something like this fixed? I have already emailed Nikon Service, but have not heard anything back in about a week.

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated.

i've not had that problem, but i did have to have the flash unit on my d70 replaced after i ran over my bag w/ the car. (sigh...)

anyway... i wanna say it cost me about $200 plus shipping to get it replaced. took right at a month to get it back.

have you done a reset yet? i'd sure try that before i sent it off... and make sure i had the latest firmware...

good luck...

Don't say such horrible things! It'll be ok.

Ouch, bummer to here about the car incident. $200 bucks huh? For a little more I could get another SB-800. I will definately try the reset thing to see if that helps. I did call Nikon a few minutes ago and they recommended the reset thing too. I found several instances of this happening on Google, but the Nikon tech support guy said this was the first he'd heard of this and it wasn't anything that they were aware of as being a common problem, so hopefully yours will be fine.

An advantage to getting another SB800 is that is will contribute to the exposure as well. The on board flash in commander mode triggers the other flash but does nothing to light your model.

Hey Dan, great to hear from you. You're right the SB-800 is great. I am just lazy sometimes and just want to pop up the flash to play commander, but the SB-800 is great since it does provide light into the scene. You still loving your D200?

it was pushed down the drive by the bumper more than "run over" really, but it felt the same once i realized what was happening...

but, my only damage was the pop up flash wouldn't stay closed any more... that's relatively minor when you consider i had nearly 3 grand of equipment in the bag.

moral of the story? buy a bag made by people who also make body armor (kata r-103 in this instance). it's sooo worth it...
