I was wondering how some of you make a choice when you have more than one good picture for a challenge.
Right now I'm in the luxurious but difficult position to pick one photo out of three really nice shots (IMHO at least ;)). I have already asked different people what they thought and it pretty much evened up between the three, so that didn't help very much :(.

I critique them both seriously. I put on my 'mad crit clubber' face and see which one I can find more flaws with - then I submit the other. ;)

I show them to my husband, who picks them apart in weird ways that are often orthogonal to my own tastes. That helps me see them in a fresh way (though I don't always go with his pick!).

It's tempting to let someone else make the decision for you but that won't do much good :) If you follow their advice and the score is disappointing, you keep on wondering whether you should have submitted your own favorite after all. Then again, if you don't follow their advice and the score is bad, you beat yourself over the head for not having listened to them. Therefore, i never seek someone's input on what to submit. Just like to sweat it out all by myself ;)
When making a decision between several choices, i look for the one that might have the most voter appeal, the least flaws, and is the least cliché. Then i also look at how well i can save them for the web. If one can be saved at a quality setting of over 85% and the other at say 73%, i eliminate the lower quality from further consideration.
This has helped for me, too, when i'm ready well ahead of submission time: Submit it to the challenge and look at it periodically, including the 'suddenly' looking at my monitor while having been away from the puter for a while. Then i do the same thing with the other choice for a day.
Oh, all this agonizing and there isn't even any money on the table :)

If your goal is to get a higher score, ask yourself which one would the voters like the best. Which one is the most striking. Which one has the most wow!

With tthe self-portrait challenge, it's more a question of finding the "least worst" one. I ask questions like: "In which of these am I least likely to scare children?", or "will voters run in fear from their monitors when this pops up?", and "how can they vote if they're hurling ontheir keyboards?".
ah, the trials. |

Am i right in assuming you have taken the plunge into a submission of Full Frontal Nudity? :P |

every time i think i chose the right photo, it does worse that i think the other would have gotten.. so my suggestion.. pick the one you think will score best, and throw it away :)

The trick in getting someone else to help you figure out which one to use is to not let THEM pick it. This is one reason I find my husband useful. When I ask him to shred a photo, he'll shred it, in a businesslike and completely unsentimental manner. :-> He'll also bring up facets that are obvious to him but invisible to me, letting me look for them, think about them, and decide if I think they add anything to the photo.

Having mulitiple photos to choose from is difficult, but a very good situation to be in. I choose my photos from the crispest, clearest shot in 99% of challenge situations. Most of the time when I have multiple photos to choose from, I end up looking for the one that sucks less. And probably in those situations my decision ends up getting me a 4.8 instead of a 4.6. The cliche challenge I had 6 photos I had lined up Friday night. I thought about it and at 11:30pm Sunday, I chose an entirely different one than those 6 because it was clearer and sharper than any of the others. For a last minute decision, it brought me a 5.9. I make my decisions based on clarity. It seems to be working for most of the challenges lately.
Good luck. Whichever one you pick, it will likely be the wrong one.
Thats just the way it is.... Bob |
