I'll speak up against avatars. I've been on other sites that use them and I don't like them, I feel they cheapen the look of the site.

If you use Firefox there are extensions that allow you to see avatars under the usernames for every post...if you want it, go get the extension, if you don't like it, don't use it. I personally love being able to see the profile pics next to the posts.
Follow the link biteme gave. |

Sorry to participate in a discussion that everyone feels is stupid and unnecessary. I'll shut up and maybe it'll die. |

I agree with Nards and others. Avatars would take the professional feel of DPC and plummet it down to the level of any crappy teen who cares forum. They are one of the curses of the internet along with emoticons. I like the little pictures now as they are small and give useful info such as who is a member and who is a council member. Please don't change the clean feel of the forums!
Just my 2 cents.
Thanks.

As has already been posted, for those using FireFox, the functionality is already there, through extensions.
I do agree somewhat with those that dislike avatars, it could be construed to "deprofessionalize" the forums. That need not be the case, however. In fact, I've had them turned on for some time, and I really have come to like the fact that I can see who posted at a glance, like recognizing faces in a crowd. No need to read the username. |

This thread has been "revived", and it's interesting timing. I've been using the Greasemonkey extension (see Biteme's link below) that shows peoples profile pic with every post now for a number of weeks now, and I have to say, it's fantastic.
Advantages:
- I can browse through a thread, and immediately find someones post I'm looking for, by their face.
- I get a more personal feel for who's writing the note
- I "get to know" the DPCers better, associating faces with names
- Sometimes, I don't see a face, but rather a drawing or symbol which indicates mood. For example, mk's head in the oven, or bradP's stick figures. Those work for me too, as they are very personal as well.
- Sometimes, the profile photo just makes me smile--I love seeing Hanneke's joyful smile. I guess the cliche is right.
But I do prefer to see people's pictures overall. The extension is great--I highly recommend it. It makes the forums even more enjoyable.

i love the greasemonkey extension, but i couldn't use it without the adblock extension. let's face it -- some of y'all are UGLY! :P
j/k, but it is nice to be able to see the profile pics with the posts and i think that's plenty. custom avatars would cheapen the look and distract from the posts, which should be the most important part.
i do miss the greasemonkey extension when i'm on a computer that doesn't have it installed. |

And if I don`t have firefox? :( Buuu... I really think that the page should have the option to display the profile pics on the forums, If someone likes the way it is right now, he/she can turn it off... Pleeeaseeeeee! I really think I am loosing all the fun! |
