Just to start off, since I have written a few of these already today (yes I'm slacking at work), I am by no means an authoritative judge or critic. My average score is just lower than most of Team Sucks so take it as you will. I just want to put that disclaimer out there.
While there aren't alot of photos in your profile to get a definitive answer, you main strength seems to be color. You have a good eye of finding color that compliments each other or has a good polar opposite relationship. Not sure if you studied the color wheel before, but it seems that you have a good grasp out of it. So the beginning is there, I just think you have to work on the compositions and technicals. I do see you being a big color oriented photographer in the future. |

Team Suckers, take a look at the buzz on Skewsme's excellent entry for Battle of the Sexes! A lot of users picked it as their choice for the blue:

Oh Yoda noraneko, that was great. Please teach us more. Seriously, that was really good. Thank you for sharing that. You might want to talk to SC about having that listed in the tutorial section of DPC.
Actually, I would like to see more members list tips like this. I realize that it takes a long time to do it and people are very busy but it is great. I'm still very much in the learning stage of PS because I came from PSP9. While I'm in the thanking mode, I would like to say thanks to skewsme for the tips she sent to me. She is definitely a master at photoshop. She says she isn't but I know better. Just look at some of the things she has done. |

Deb, I guess your Best of 2006 is beating mine :)
My Match entry started at 6.6, was at 6.4 with 100 votes and has slowly fallen to where it is now. My scores don't usually move that much after 100 votes. Oh, well, it is still in the 6's.
Don't have any entries for any of this week yet.

my potential challenge entries are getting more and more weird :(
I've just taken one for exit, edited it and no way:) even I think it's weird.
I should have taken a normal shot of someone going out of somewhere, with some nice movement and blur and stuff instead:) oh well, sorry dear team!
but I'm in in all free studies and expert editing. in nude, too. too bad, it turned out to be much easier to make a good nude then a good basic editing exit shot:(
I forgot to say sorry for not commenting much, I will do it tomorrow when I finally don't work and have much time, looking forward to it!

I think your strongest assest is you pure composition mechanic. You are very good at placing items in the rule of thirds and using strong lines. I might suggest incorporating a little near/middle/far, aspect to your photos. While compositionally they are correct, some photos just lack depth and as such they feel on the same flat plain. Your best photos seem to incorporate this, but nearly all your photos contain the fundamental basics of lines and subject placement. As for style, you seem pretty adept at them all.
I'll comment on a few pics in a moment. |
Thanks for all your comments!

Hey thank you so much you made my day. What nice things to say and you are right. I am a big color person. I always used the brightnest cayons in the box when I was little. :) |

Okay, just for fun I went to the profiles of the last few Team Suck members to post, and looked for strong points that caught my eye:
jaysonmc: Jayson, great use of color and lighting. It is pretty obvious that you have a lot of technical skill. You love of domestic animals - particularly horses - really shows through. Welcome to Team Suck and Team Novice in particular!
bmartuch: Bob, I've noticed you have a great eye for perspective; all of your top scoring photos have been of creative angles of architecture. I think you also have a lot of technical skill both with the camera and in PS. Plus you are a really consistent commenter!
levyj413: Jeffrey, we all know you're a whiz at night photography, but one aspect that really stands out is your ability to grasp movement - be it via architectural curves or your girls swimming. You also leave very honest, constructive comments.
cosprenks: Rosemary, because you are relatively new, I am not as familiar with your style as some of the others. However, I think you have some really creative ideas, a sense of humor that shows through (i.e. Santa with his nose hair) , and your recent photos have been very sharp.
meyers: Rob, you appear to be very skilled technically and have creative ideas (i.e. 'measuring the speed of light'). To me what really stands out though is your ability to capture emotives using objects, particularly the woodies.
silverfoxx: Svetlana, you are definitely not afraid to take risks, and your inherent sense of artistry is obvious. You are very strong with light and shadows, and extremely creative. You are also skilled with PS and know how to process your photos to make them pop.
raish: Peter, I've noticed you have a keen sense of perspective and an eye for capturing a great moment, such as the skydiver portrait. I also think you are a bit of a risk taker, which is great. Your recent portfolio additions (snow photos) show very strong composition.
chaimelle: Elaine - lines, lines and lines! You have a rare ability to capture beauty in the mundane, such as the sticky pad. Your abstracts are very strong, and your color choices help make them pop.
I know there are a lot more strengths in all of the above photos, but these are what 'jumped out at me'. Plan to look at everyone else's profiles soon.

Kelli, I think Germany is 6 or 7 hours ahead of us. I know that Ireland is 5 hours ahead so I believe Germany is another 1 or 2. |

Originally posted by timfythetoo: Hey noraneko. Now I understand what you are talking about. I do shift my white balance setting on my camera but usually just between sun and the flourescent light one I think. But now knowing how to tweak it easily in RAW I am not usually as concerned with it. You gave a great tutorial on it though. Well done and I am sure helpful to many. I am still trying to figure out all of my different camera settings and I feel like I have only touched the tip of the iceberg with the whole photoshop thing.
Oh yeah - and GO TEAM SUCK! (This really is a cool community within a community) |
Yeah, Tim....this is an outstanding community.....it's supportive and helpful.
This little thing we're doing now is just another of the things that seems to have just grown out of impromptu ways that are found to help each other......so we help each other develop our strengths and everybody wins.
I kind of envision us getting sharper and sharper and fine tuning our skills 'til we're a formidable front in any competition anywhere and we'll still be funner and have worse grammar.
There doesn't seem to be any stupid egos to get bruised and a whole bucket of common sense.
Back to the camera.....I pretty much shoot in full manual any more and watch my exposure meter....I err towards underexposed and shoot in RAW 'cause as long as I don't blow out the highlights, I can fix anything in RAW before I even convert to jpeg to fine tune....I just brought out a pic today that the only thing I did once I got to jpeg was to put a border on it. And I only minimally adjusted the temp in RAW.
I virtually do nothing off AWB and I'm amazed at how much faster my shutter speeds are now that I'm going for a little underexposing. I was shooting F/22 Saturday doing portraits at shutters in the 320-500 range....and the shots were coming out the way I wanted them too, light-wise. The only other Nikon DSLR that was there was getting the same thing. He and I were blowing out all over the place under 250/F16 where the Canons were all shooting at less than 160 shutter....and mostly at F/11.
It was weird.
This is such a hoot because three months ago, my camera had never been off Automatic.
I finally, after 30 years, am really understanding the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and how to get the depth of field and effects I want. I just recently learned that in order to get the glasslike reflections from bodies of moving water to s l o w the shutter speed....who'd of thought??????
I'm learning all this stuff here or understanding and learning it somewhere else because of tying it into actual practice, advice/help, and experience here.

I give this in the highest regards. I think you are the ying to my yang. I'm too much the traditional photographer, you push the envelope. I'm more on mechanics, you are more on the artsy side. Both have ends have their merits, but yours is a vision truly unique. |
