I think I finally have a chance at a 5+ score on this one. Wish me luck.

I set my final on JPEG 12 and it still only came out to 135 kb. Wooohoo!

Yep :)

Makes sense to me, 720 pixels + 200 Kb works for an image where the "subject" is supposed to take up only a small portion of the frame...

R.

I think I'd rather have 720 and 150 for minimalism, but 720 and 250 for fill the frame. Seems to me few people are going to go much over 150, even at 720, in the minimalism challenge, whereas the extra 50 would come in handy for fill the frame.

But it's dumb to even argue about it. It doesn't REALLY matter.

OK, think I have got my minimilism entry sorted out.. Biggest tool I missed? The crop tool!!

Didnt realise how much I would miss that damn thing! Eventually I had to swap my 5D body for my 300D body just to give me more of a crop.. thank god I kept that little Rebel!

Crop factor cameras are useful after all :-)

I got mine in fairly early this time. I just hope people like it. :p

Well I pulled what I had in and entered something totally different. I wonder how many times I will change my mind before the deadline?

Well it is the first time that I have done minimum or no post processing for submitting this challenge. Oh God is it so easy to submit photo to contest? I remember the time put in lot of post processing, seeing the final images from all angles of screen, sometimes by standing, siting etc. etc. But this time just desaturating, resized, saved for web & released..Also mind is not cluttered by the confusion I did it right or wrong. Feels so relaxing may be until starting the challenge.

Did the SCs ever officially answer the question about whether or not extracted jpgs from RAW files were ok? Not talking about RAW conversion.

i have to admit this was a tough challenge. perfect was never straight from the camera when i shot with film and developed in a darkroom.

if there were only one thing i'd like to be able to adjust in a challenge like this... white/black point...

i still might go for 'fill the frame'

I am in. Took me three sessions before I was happy with how the shot was "cropped" in the camera. I had to see the shots "on the big screen" before I could decide whether I liked the positioning or not.

Reading through the EXIF on my RAW images, there is nothing to differentiate if the image was originally shot in RAW or JPG.. This must be wide open to abuse.

Still, love the minimal editing rules, I have been a big advocate of them for ages, so felt kinda obliged to enter this challenge.

Somewhere it should tell you "Image Quality" If you shoot highest res .jpeg it should say FINE.

great part of the game is in the respect of the rules of the challenges. if you can win 200 ribbons without rules you amuse yourself?

Rhino.. Not saying I would do it, perish the thought, but just saying its defintely open to abuse, however, as CEJ pointed out, it looks like there is a way to tell the differences. Which is a good thing..

Cheers CEJ.

I accomplished my goal of shooting for the minimalism challenge this morning. Results were good... except for....Ah, ha! Dust spots in the sky. Yes, a common occurrence, especially with a small aperture setting. Normally, I wouldn't even bother to clean the sensor for these few. Easy to clone or patch out. But, the rules say "no spot editing of any kind". So, either I leave them in and submit "as is" or reshoot after cleaning the sensor. I did have some shots with wider aperture where the dust spots don't show, but I wanted more DOF, so I won't use those.

This becomes a test of one's ethics. Not wanting to be DQ'd. (Have never been DQ'd.) Will people be looking for dust spots in the sky? You bet they will!

Alright, this jpg shooting w/o editing is a pain. But, it does increase my awareness of housekeeping issues and getting the parameters just right in the field. For that, this challenge is valuable.

BTW, how small is "very small" portion of the image space?
01/23/2007 04:11:25 PM · #43
it's relative to the inverse of the square of the root of evil !

Well, it's good to know it's "relative" to it. Leaves a bit of wiggling room.

Should be interesting to see how people vote. I'm guessing sensor dust will be penalized more than normal but maybe not if you have a compelling subject and/or lots of eye candy.

I think I will deduct at least 6 points for any sensor dust, especially in the sky, but add 2 for each eye and or candy. :)

minimal help :) can i apply two times the sharpen filter?

My question exactly. And the shot I like best has a very, very small secondary subject... I wonder if that will be seen as "too much" in a minimalism challenge. Because regularly I think it adds to it.

Any guesses?

I dunno, I never feel like I have any wiggling room when I'm around my relatives. :-)

Yes, but the Fade command is off limits.
