I think that this piece could be said for most of us here at Team Suck.....and that this little group that is constantly learning and improving from each other probably gets more from the chance meeting here than was ever imagined.

I appreciate the analyses, guys. And as for having scores above 6 something on the top row, also note that I have over 100 challenges entered to date. There's the whole blind squirrel/acorn thing to consider at that point. You'll note I have some really excellent scores at the other end as well - some of which are my personal favorites. :-)
What's been nagging at me lately is this - why, if I have seem to have a weird somewhat consistent ability to score OK to well (with the occasional stinker just for good measure), can I not get a really, really good score? What is lacking?
A while back, when some of the friendly head to head stuff started up - DrAchoo created his list of "really good DPC guys" and set up a challenge. So I set up the Middle Masses Massacre and invited folks who had a 5.5 average or less to play. (I think Doc's group required a high-altitude average to play.) It was quite fun, and oddly enough, several members of Team Suck may remember those days. :-)
Where I'm going... One of the Middling Masses was a newbie by the name of timfythetoo. Compare our portfolios. He's had one more challenge entered than me, yet has a 6.0 average and his top five shots are all above 7 (and he has another one coming up in wildlife.) Yet about a year or so ago, we were pretty much in the same place.
I might assert that I need to work a whole lot more on "set-up" shots and take less "just go find it" shots if I want to score better. And maybe I'll give that a whirl for awhile - see where it goes. I could start with "Nude" but it's simply too cold out to shave the cats.
Just thinkin' out loud. Not a biggie at all, and I really, really do appreciate that you guys do like what I do. I like it too. :-) |

kdsprog, I think you have a couple of strengths - one is critters, the other is "the everyday". You do good critters. As for "the everyday", I like how you see everyday things. Always just a little on the different side. When I get home from work (yes, I shouldn't be doing this now), I'll find a couple of shots to illustrate what I mean. :-) |

Melethia, just for kicks I went to look at timfythetoo's profile. I noticed a couple of things besides the obvious fact that he is a very good photographer:
-he's a master at framing his photos well. I think that is something all of us at Team Suck could work on. By framing, I mean the actual frame job done in Photoshop, not framing inside the photo. His framing is so subtle it would be easy to overlook - yet it enhances his photos very, very well.
-he's a master at white balance. He definitely knows when he needs to use a warming filter, a cooling filter, and vice-versa. One of the reasons his pet portrait won the blue is because it looks so warm, hence inviting.
I actually took a course on lighting not too long ago and learned all about white balance. The difference in my scores recently (aside from my upcoming colossal flop in Match) partly reflects that new knowledge. I'd be happy to share details if anyone is interested. |

Please do share! And I have no idea what you're talking about with respect to filters. I do know filters that one attaches to the front of one's lens - I have a UV filter permanently attached to one of mine due to clumsiness and falling on my camera one day - but I've not worked with anything in Photoshop with filters. |

For another unasked for perspective....for the life of me I hve no idea why kdsprog's work doesn't score better.

Please note that I am definitely not knocking Mr Too. Or Mrs Too. Or any of the Too clan. I happen to like 'em, too, umm, also.
Anyway, I do talk to Tim on a fairly regular basis so I don't think he'll mind the comparison. It's been a lot of fun watching his rise into the ranks of "them". And yet, Aimee still kicks his butt in head to head competition. :-) |

It's not unasked for, I'm asking! LOL!
BTW - I started my new job Friday, I worked Sunday, went to work yesterday and half way through the day came down with a wicked virus. Puking all over! How embarrassing. I wasn't sure I'd make it home, my vision blurred, I had to pull over numerous times to puke and almost hit a parked car. They asked me to stay home today. The funny thing about it is I haven't been sick in over a year. I'm still quite queasy, but it's a lot better than yesterday.

Well let me beging by saying that this is all very flattering. Uncalled for yet flattering.
My first experiences here socially at DPC was from the middling masses. Melethia was an influence in getting me plugged in here at DPC. And it is great to see that neither Deb or I would qualify for that tournament anymore as our scores have risen above the requirements. Of everyone I have met here my relationship with Deb has been and remains the strongest.
And I will agree with some of the assesments of Debs work here. Her images are strong and well executed. The hurdle her images must jump is that they are not "DPC friendly" in the pop/eye candy type way. That does not mean they suck, but in the 2 second mentality of DPC they can get overlooked. Debs images are pleasing long term. They are best enjoyed when looked at for a longer period of time than a typical voters window. They have subtle qualities that are beautiful, perspectives that are different, and her editing style suits her subjects - clean and precise without the excessive garishness that many (including me at times) employ in their entries. I love Debs work both in her photos and the contributions she makes to the DPC community through her comments and support of other photographers. She ROCKS!
And on one other side note - I honestly dont have a clue what those filters are that noraneko is talking about. It was just a couple of weeks ago that I found out that there was a white balance tool in my RAW convertor program. Everything (and I mean everything) that I have learned about PP has come from DPC and its members. When Deb said I was a newbie back in the middling masses days she was not kidding. Thank you all for all the kind words. This community here is an awesome part of the DPC world. Keep up the great work all!- |

LOL - She isn't knocking me yet still lumps me with "them". (I love you too Deb)
And yes - Aimee still kicks my butt. But after this week I close the gap by one. |

Man, I can't keep up with this thread. Several people said things I'm going to respond to in one post.
Originally posted by Melethia: What's been nagging at me lately is this - why, if I have seem to have a weird somewhat consistent ability to score OK to well (with the occasional stinker just for good measure), can I not get a really, really good score? What is lacking? |
If you figure that, out, Deb, be a good pal and let me know. It's exactly how I feel (well, okay, aside from shots of DC monuments). In my case, the answer is probably get out and shoot more; I tend to let challenges drive my shooting. On the other hand, I'm squeezing this into a fairly busy family and social life.
Originally posted by bmartuch: You just seem to have an absolute mastery of the camera itself. You know what it can and can't do and how to get the most out of it. You seem to be able to take what people say couldn't be done with a camera and make it happen. I definitely have a lot to learn to be where you are. |
Hmm. Really? I can't say I agree, but I'm ... amused? ... that I seem to have fooled you. :) I feel like I regularly can't get the shot I have in my head. Do you have a specific example of something I did that doesn't seem to be doable?

Heh. Didn't realize my comments were worth mentioning! I think I've commented on most of your top scorers, by the way. :)

Command decision, skewsme - just decide. Team Suck isn't the best at committee work. :-)
And Tim, dear, you know I meant that fondly. The whole "them" thing. Really. :-) |

Great - it looks like the "wildlife" of kdsprog and Brookied are getting the Out of Focusers back into the game.

Skewsme, thank you so much for the mythology lesson!:) this is interesting. I've always wanted to ask how it all started but never did, I don't know why. it seems to me the suck league has always been here and my head just can't get the fact that it actually had a beginning some time ago :)

We probably should form a Suck Interview Committee (SIC) and start a new round of suckee interviews. Yes, I know how much we love committees but we could do our work in a random fashion. |

That's two of this one via DPCPrints and one on eBay:
And yesterday someone bought a print of this via DPCPrints:
I think I might actually be in the black now. ;) Only 200 more sales and I'll have paid for an SLR!

Would you rather have the comments or the score? My own Wildlife is lacking in the score department, but great in the comments.

oh yeah - Match at a steady 4.5, WIldlife at 5.2-5.3 range. Just submitted for Entrance, don't know if I can get a Nude, and don't really have a clue what to shoot for Fill the Frame. |
