"This should reduce the risk of the other 8 macs in exsistance to not get the virus."

Excuse me, but what's a "virus"?

Kind regards, a Macintosh user since 1989

It's something you shouldn't be complacent about.

Kind regards, a security professional ;o)

That article is already 10 weeks old... has anyone heard of the virus in the meantime?

Proof-of-concept virus largely harmless.

Security experts have detected a virus that targets Apple's Mac OS X systems.

Symantec has classified the virus as a level-one 'very low' threat, as it lacks a 'payload' or any sort of malicious instructions other than simply to replicate itself. The security firm said that, once OSX.Macarena is launched, it infects every file located in the same folder. At the time this article was written, Symantec confirmed that there were fewer than 50 confirmed cases of infection.

Whoa, I really feel threatened now.
I think the only danger for my Macs is that they are connected to a Windows server.

Yes, but it proves that it is possible for MacOS to get infected, admittedly it's much more unlikely at present and the only real damage would be when exploiting an unpatched security hole and/or a user running as root... but that doesn't mean that MacOS will always be safe - its a matter of ease & size of target (even Linux is targeted by some viruses now).

Mac? as in Apple?

Why would someone try to infect a load of MP3 players?

Oooooh, I feel so much safer now knowing that our air transportation system runs on windows, because all the bug writers will be busy with Macs from now on. ; P
Only kiddin'
PC or Mac, they all work, or we would not be here on line. Some are more work than others, but they work.
Does XP mean "Xtra Patience" ? Can't wait till "Various Illnesses Surfaced Today Already" comes out.

Um, yeah. People have been saying that since OS X was first released in 1999. It's also possible for your house to be leveled by an atom bomb, but have you built an underground shelter? Complacency, you know. ;-P

Honestly, who would write a virus for a mac? That would be like a terrorist bombing an abandoned desert town. Not worth the effort.

Would Bill Gates even want to build a virus and ruin Apple? I think he would be in all kinds of anti-trust suits if that happened.

Vulnerabilities maybe, but not exploits. That guy is trying to show that something might be possible even though it's never actually happened. Many of the issues noted have already been patched, and rest no doubt will be in Apple's next security update. This is NOT the same as Windows, which has tens of thousands of actual viruses, worms and trojans.

Apple is a bigger company than Dell. If you're a hacker seeking attention, what better way than to be the first author of a Mac virus?

AVG Free here.....none of this even makes it into my mail box. :)

However, they're discountinuing the free version next month.

Version 7.1 is expiring but version 7.5 will still be available.

Or you just support them a bit and pay (what's that?) for the full version.

If you need all the features of the pro version then that's the route to go. If you don't, why pay for features you don't need.

It isn't about the computer manufactures, it is about the OS. Dell might be smaller, but Dell, Gateway, Alien, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony, HP, E-machines ect... make up 97% of the market share for computers. Apple accounts for some of the rest. Those viruses are for windows not the mac os.

Also it would take a very long time for a mac virus to spread. It probably could not make the jump from PC's to macs. So in order for it to spread it would have to be when a mac comes in contact with another mac. That probably doesn't happen often. In that amount of time it would be taken care of.

If I did make a mac virus how would I get that virus to spread? Mac machine to mac server to mac machine.

There are quite a few Linux viruses, despite an even smaller market share.
