Could someone please tell me if gradient fill layer mask is allowed in basic editing?

no.

NO LAYERS AND NO MASKS ALLOWED.

No. Layers that contain pixel data are not allowed (only Adjustment Layers are allowed), and layer blending modes other than normal are not allowed, so the use of a gradient fill layer mask would involve at least two illegal actions.

By the way, you can save yourself some type by doing a forum search when asking these types of questions -- there's a good chance they've been asked before. A search for "gradient fill layer mask basic" turns up this set of results. The 4th thread on that list is where someone asked this same question recently.

Thank you Terry for your quick response. Please note I accept what you say and my next question is not an attempt to circumnavigate, but to clarify to this poor PS novice.

What is 'layers that contain pixel date' as opposed to 'adjustment layer'?
I understand no selections, what other type is there?
