Since I got my 5D i dont have any kind of flash at all. Although I do not require a flash for the majority of my shooting I am on a mission this year to pay for my photography gear with my photography. I have already had a few things put to me by people but I will need a flash to do so.

A sales person will talk me into a 580 ex, would you?

cheers,

nick

I think it is a good choice if you want to use the canon series of flashes off camera. Use the 580 as a master and slave a cheaper 430 or 420. Even if you don't eventually buy other flashes I guess it would fill your needs albeit somewhat more expensively than a 430. FWIW, I've only had one for about 3 weeks now and havn't had much time to experiment. I do have a couple of recently uploaded SP in my portfolio using the 580 as a master with a 430.

P.S. I do like the selector wheel on the 580 when comparing to my 430! I found it quicker and more intuitive than buttons.

Happy shopping. mark

Nick...I would just tell you to buy it. I know what you want with your work and I know you won't be satisfied with your work without it. Just get it and I know you will pay it back with your work.

If you want to stick your toes in, get the 430EX. It works great, teaches you what you need to know, and then when you are ready for two flashes, get the 580 and slave out the 430. That's one approach anyway :-)

the 5D has no built-in flash, so YES, you'd need a flash unit (just in case?)
