If the winning photo is crap, they are unlikely to use it on any promotional materials, and I don't think the contract you give them allows them to use it to actually defame you.

A version of this conversation eventually became codified as Sturgeon's Law:

Interviewer: Surely, Mr. Sturgeon, you must admit that 90% of science-fiction is crud.

Theodore Sturgeon: Of course, but then, 90% of everything is crud.

This Law is nearly as pervasive in its influence as that of Murphy, as my Portfolio will attest ...

Intervalometer. That's what my camera calls it, too. Where'd that term come from?

Anyway, back on the topic, I think whoever said this is a way for them to get a bunch of free stock photos is probably right.

But so what? And who even needs a timer? Just press the shutter five times and send 'em whatever happens to come out. Or if you really want to send them black shots, leave the lens cap on.

The contest is just a part of Shoot-all-the-time day. Did anyone read this part?

"How many pictures do you take on a typical day? C'mon, be honest. I'll bet it's not as many as you'd like, or you should, if you're going to develop as a photographer. In a recent poll at //www.PopPhoto.com , readers admitted as much...

[snip] I, too, confess to under-shooting. But that's about to change. You and I -- and anyone else willing to invest a day -- are about to push our skills and develop our eyes in a hard-core, dawn-to-dusk shootathon. Get ready to give everything from your right index finger to your optic nerves one helluva workout."

OK, but where do they say what is under-shooting, average-shooting, and over-shooting? Sounds wonky to me.

A thermometer measures temperatures. A chronometer measures time. An intervalometer measures intervals :-)

It's Canon's proprietary term for this automated feature. I've never gotten around to using mine either ... : (

Contests like this are sometimes about getting qualified names and contact information, paticularly e-mail addresses. Valid, qualified contact information is worth a LOT in the spam world... even if those spammers are legitamate businesses. They pay big bucks for each address. And there are a lot of forums out there that have no problem with selling member information to agencies that collect this type of information. If you have an ISP account that has a lot of e-mail addresses, it's always interesting to use a different one to sign up at a few places and see how long after that you start getting spam.

Here is part of their Privacy Policy:

"...

We may match information collected from you through different means or at different times, including both Personal Information and Site Usage Information, and use such information along with information obtained from other sources, including our other Web sites, print publications and third parties, and such merged information will be treated in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

It's a jungle out there... and the animals have control.
