When I set up my camera for RAW is the preview I am seeing on the LCD screen the .pef (RAW) file or a .jpg file?

As I understand it, you are seeing the photo as captured (with the W/B settings, sharpening, etc.) displayed. That is, as it would be if you had saved as a JPEG. You can obviously override these when processing the .PEF file on your computer.

This is based upon my experience with the DS. I assume it's the same with the DL, but can't guarantee it.

Embedded in each Pentax RAW file is a low-to-medium quality JPG. This is what is shown in the camera display.

I have a free utility that will extract all the JPGs from all the RAW files. It's good for thumbnails/preview. PM me if you want it. I will either send it to you or point you to the web site where I found it. I will be flying this afternoon, so it may be over the weekend before I can send it.

Edit: If I can locate the original URL (link), I'll post it here.

Sounds like that utility overcomes one of the main complaints against the K100D, that it doesn't let you shoot RAW+Jpeg. (Didn't stop me from buying it!).

Here is the link to the free JPG extractor. It is called, "PEF2JPEG" and can be downloaded here:

//www.kit.hi-ho.ne.jp/yj_okawa/pef2jpeg_readme-e.html

Scroll down to the [Download] section and click the link.

Just so you know, on the Pentax CD that came with your camera, there is a JPG extractor included in the PhotoBrowser/Laboratory program.

For Mac users, here's a link to a similar program (called "File Juicer"):

//echoone.com/filejuicer/formats/formats?f=pef

Welcome on board, megapix. How do you like your new camera? Does it live up to expectations? I have one on order, the company sent one yesterday, but it was the K110D, so it has gone back. Should have the K100D mid next week.

I absolutely love it. Easy to use, intuitive controls, bright viewfinder. I shoot mainly in aperture priority or manual mode, and the on camera controls make it very simple and quick to bracket up or down (in Av) or use the meters to set exposure (in manual). The anti-shake is well worth the extra wait for the K100 (and the extra expense) ... I've got a pic up in the panning challenge right now that I shot at 1/10 second with a nice sharp panned image. Also works great with my old pentax lenses ... I've even got an entry in one of the upcoming challenges using my 20-year old 300mm manual focus f/4!

And thaks, Les, for the link and theheads up on the utility included in the CD (I haven't loaded anything of the CD yet because the kids monopolize the XP machine so most of my post-processing ends up getting done on a laptop running Win98!)
