Total noob question here about my flash...
I compose a frame in a darkened room with my camera with no flash. Auto shutter speed is .5 sec. I attach my flash, turn it on, flash recognizes the focal length, etc... but camera still says a shutter speed of .5 sec - what's going on? Shouldn't the shutter be faster since there will be a TON more light when the flash fires?
I'm confused...

Sounds like slow sync is on. BTW the flash doens't care what speed the camera is on, the output will be the same. The slower speed will help balance the ambient exposure with the flash exposure, assuming the flash is set to TTL. |

If you are in Av mode, then your camera is measuring the amount of ambient light and setting the correct shutter speed based on the aperture you have chosen. When the flash fires, it will be in "fill flash mode", attempting to light the subject but still allow your ambient light to be visible.
If you want to darken the room and only show your subject, then switch to manual mode and dial in the speed and aperture you really want.

If you are shooting in Av, then the camera will settle for an exposure as if there were no flash attached and then use the flash to fill in some of the shadows. You could try switching to manual, 1/60 sec f/8 and let the flash provide just about all the light.
Edit: Too slow, once again.

If only there was a little note on the screen saying "XYZ is currently replying to this thread". :-)

I believe there's also an option to set the default shutter speed for AV with flash to be 1/200
