For reasons unknown, my CD drive decided to give up the ghost on Saturday morning. It happened when my main drive is at capacity and my camera was full of images. Luckily, I have a WEBEX connection to my office machine and plenty of space there. So, I set about transferring a couple of gigs of images from here to there. When it was done, I checked that all the directories were in place on the office machine and deleted them from my drive, allowing me space to offload my camera.
Great save, I thought! Wrong!!
I discovered yesterday when I went to work that two of the directories that I transferred did NOT actually transfer the images included. About 40 images lost and gone forever. And these were edited images, ready for sale or stock. Damn, damn, damn!
The lost images include my Magazine Cover entry (which now ONLY exists as a file at dpc), so i sure hope there are no DQ requests!
Just needed to rant. Normal service will now be resumed.

I can relate Jak. Though mine weren't awesome shots, they did have sentimental value. I did something similar to almost all of my christmas 2002 family get together shots. :-(
Now, I don't delete anything.

Happened to me in January...
Lost about a month of images (hadn't burned any CD's for awhile). Then in March, my vehicle was stolen while returning to Colorado from Virginia (while stopped at a hotel for the night). The car had all of my software, including all of my CD's that I burned of images...
Now I have two hard drives installed and I copy from one to the other, as well as burning CD's, and I paid for a membership at PBase where I upload originals and edited versions of my favorites for safekeeping.

I lost 700 - 1000 files about a year ago. One of my ex-friends thought it would be funny to have a friend hack my computer, delete everything and never speak to me again. I got about 400 back, but lost a TON of things - family shots, etc. I backed up last week, thanks to Setzler and Jacko.

Sorry to hear Jak :( How awful. I have a pit feeling in my stomach at the thought.
Just tonight, I opened a CD case to retrieve an old file from last year.. the case was empty!! I am so careful usually! I luckily found it in the other computer, but in January of this year when my new computer died, I was not so lucky. Lost quite a few images and important documents. :(

Hi Jak, I am very sorry to learn of your computing problems. Last week, I too experienced a computer failure, in fact, a hard drive failure. Luckily, I sensed something was wrong early and backed-up my ALL DATA file over my home 802.11 network to another computer's hard drive.
I replaced the defective Western Digital drive with two Seagate drives running a new hardware mirroring technology. So, every file is now redundantly stored. I operate Windows 2000 Professional, which is far more robust compared to previous versions of the Microsoft OS.
This solution may be a good idea for you too? It cost far less than I expected to have it all implemented. They were able to recover 100% of my data off of the old drive too. I now run two 120 GB drives in parallel.
With my home network back-up, I feel far more secure with this triple back-up (primary drive, mirrored drive and second networked computer back-up). The service centre was trying to sell me a tape back-up as well for quadruple redundancy, but I declined to buy this option due to the extra cost. I am not sure if I should have declined, time will tell.
