Hi everyone,
I'm looking to get the Canon 24-70mm f2.8L, but I'm wondering if an IS version (or something just as amazing or better) is coming out in the near future. Does anyone have any sites that list Canon's future releases and reviews of lenses that are coming out soon? Do you think the IS is 'missing' from this lens, or is it perfect without it? Thanks in advance!

Perfect without it!
There's always the 24-105 f/4L IS, which is every bit as sharp, but f/4. It also has more distortion (barrel) at the wide end. Though that's easy to correct in post, I prefer the nearly-distortion-free 24mm from the 24-70.
I'd also say that, while IS can be a benefit at focal lengths below 50mm for static subjects, it really doesn't help much with live subjects. You can easily hand-hold at 1/30th at 24mm without IS, and that's already slower than you really want to be for (most) human subjects.
I haven't seen too much in the way of rumor on any new lens announcements. Canon's being pretty tight-lipped. The 50/1.2 only leaked a short while prior to its actual announcement, for instance.
My recommendation: go for the 24-70, you will not regret it.
BTW, where the heck you been?? Good to see you around again!

| Hi there, great to be back... trying to get back into this world. I'm doing some more headshots these days too. By the way, I was looking at macro lenses, but I hear the Sigma 105 isn't great for portraits. I see a lot of people discussing the 50 1.8 with ext tubes instead (using it for macro and for portraits). What are your thoughts on this? I am going to get the 24-70mm 2.8L for a mid-range mm, but I want to consider portraits/macro too. Portraits for headshots, but macro because it's my FAVORITE type of photography and I don't have a macro lens :( I used to use filters 2x and 4x, but that was on my 58mm ring. My lenses are now all 72mm. So, what are your thoughts? |

Hey welcome back Arie! Let's start getting some LADPC outings going again!
I can't speak to the 50mm with extension tubes, but I love the Canon 100mm 2.8 if that's something you're considering. I also have the 24-70 2.8L and it's a great all-around lens. A little more reach on the long end would be nice, but I usually carry the 28-135 as well.

Hi Chuck,
I have the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS and the Tamaron 17-35mm DiAsf. I want a mid-range, so I am going with the 24-70 2.8L and I want a macro/portrait lens. I'll look into the Canon, but how is it for portraits? Remember, I have a 20D. One day, I want a full-frame, but that is over a year or two away. :) |

I know absolutely nothing about canon (I am learning for possible switch) but what about the 28-75 2.8 from tamron. I have the minolta version and love it. That might be a stupid comparision to an L lens for all I know though.

On the contrary, most people (including myself) rate the Tamron 28-75/2.8 as very close to the Canon 24-70/2.8 in terms of image quality... and you can't argue with the low price either.

| Canon 100mm 2.8 is a very nice lens for both macro and portraits. For the money, I don't think you can beat it. |

I guess a lot is going to depend on where you will be doing the portraits and how much room you have (given the crop factor). I love the 100 for macro, but never really used it for any kind of portrait photography. Also, since you have the range covered, why not use one of your zooms for portraiture. The 70-200 would do a wonderful job, despite its size. I am sure the 24-70 would do a good job as well.
If we get on another outing sometime soon, let me know and I will bring some of the lenses for you to try before buying.

Welcome back Arie!
You'd be very happy with the 24-70 for portraiture, and BTW, the 70-200 that you already own is a stunning portrait lens. The 100mm macro is also an outstanding portrait lens, definitely a hair sharper than either of the zooms. I really liked the 100mm focal length for macro on the APS-C bodies. With FF, I'm really thinking about a longer focal length for general macro work. you coudl get by with a 50mm and extension tubes for macro, but if you want to do a lot of it, a dedicate macro lens will be much more convenient.
There are at least three good choices for that length of macro lens:
- The Canon 100/2.8
- The Tamron 90/2.8
- The Sigma 105/2.8
Of the three, my fist choice is the Canon, the second choice is the Tamron. Both the Tamron and the Canon are very sharp. Some rate the tamron as slightly sharper, but it's close enough to be within sample variation.
The Canon has a couple nice features, like the full-time manual focus override that comes along with USM, and a non-extending front element. The build quality of the Canon 100/2.8 is also superb, it could be an L if they put a red stripe on it. The one downside to the Canon is that it does not come with a hood, and the hood is about $40, typical for Canon. I have the hood for mine, but don't use it for macro work, it's much too long and blocks my lighting, which I do with a 580EX and bounce card. |

Okay, I went with the Canon 100/2.8 macro and the Canon 24-70 2.8L. Eeek, I'm broke! My poor credit card. At least I got some skymiles and a canon double rebate out of this! And better yet, I hope to get some amazing photography out of this! Wooooo hooo!!!
Okay, so, let's plan an outing! |

You will be happy with both those lenses no doubt. The only complaint I have about the 24-70 is its size, which gets in the way of the flash depending on how it is angled, giving uneven lighting on the image. Otherwise, I am very happy with both of those lenses.
What about (late) February for an outing? I need to go back and find the LADPC thread... |
