i couldn't try the clamshell dealie 'cause my softbox is too big and i don't have a boom and i don't have a black backdrop and 'cause i don't have a lot of space. so, basically, i'm just screwed.

but i have a hat with horns, so neener neener.

You improv'd very well, still looks great, nice smooth light transition from one side to the other.

SC - Can we please change this thread title to: Clamshell Lighting Tecnique - One-light Portrait

That would make it easier for others to find it in the future. Thanks

Its called 'clam shell lighting' and its such a lovely look....

The something new for me was that I had to break previous studio training that had taught me to keep my lights several feet away from the model for better diffusion and to turn my fill light OFF for a softer, more graceful light.

Cindi,

Very nice light technique.

Two thoughts.

First, what may be a 'Clam Shell' term to you is also known as a 'Book Shelf', 'wedge', and many other terms per the boss at the time. In other words, the term 'Clam Shell' is accurate, but not the only term to discribe the technique. The boss is always right.

Second, what ever hands on 'training' you have had in studio is never set in stone. Lighting is as differant from one photographer, to the next. Yes, basic, fundamental understanding of what lights do, where they go, how they are used, what they can and can't do, the throw, spread, f stop, lumins, ect, ect, is good to know.

But, because the way your boss did it a certain way, shouldn't mean you will be doing it the same exact way.

Like I keep saying, there is NO right way to light, BUT, there are plenty of wrong ways.

Nice job.

Well put Horse-man. I didn't realize I was stuck in a rut of always doing things the same way until I tried doing something differently lol

Damnit, now I won't be able to find you in challenges so easily >:|

Don't worry, I'll keep up with your tricks missy!

Cindi, I really like your take on the technique (the rotation of the source and reflector). The final outcome is very close to natural window lighting, and the angle you've chosen works really well. It's dramatic, yet very soft. I love the result.
Possibly the only thing I'd change is working to get a little more separation from the background. Not a lot more, just a little.

Thanks, Kirby. I liked the lighting angle I ended up with for the same reason (it reminds me of window light). I'm going to play with this technique again today.... after a little mission with my kids (they don't know, but we're going to buy a new puppy!!). :)

Steve - I'll keep ya on your toes. ;)

Cindi has actually struck to the source of the name. The nick "kirbic" is just a permutation of "kirby", a nick I got because of my eating habits; I suck up food like a vacuum! :-)
Ah well, if I'm a vacuum, at least I'm a *quality* vacuum!

Can't say anything about Kirby (that's my dog's name too), but the lighting technique definitely doesn't suck. Nice deal Cindi, love the effect.

As wavey said, it's gonna be harder to spot ya in the challenges now :-)
