don't wanna get a rumor mill firing,
but I've heard a couple pros mention a nikon full-frame is very likely on the way within the next year. I thought this wasn't likely because I had heard them state it was not something they were interested in doing.
Not sure this is something I wanted, but don't think I would mind it with the option.
Anyone heard anything about this or links to speculation?
just curious.

As long as they set the microlenses like Leica did, so that light falloff is counteracted, this would be a very nice thing. It'd be out of my price range anyhow, so I'm not sure that it really matters to me.
This would support that idea, and this has been Nikon's main problem with FF digital, I think.

| besides getting more wide angle from the crop factor, what other benefits are there to having full frame? Theoritically, noise level should be lower, but practically, I think Nikon (and other non full framed cameras) are doing really OK with the noise control. |

| More pixels, better DOF control, really big bright viewfinder... |

I believe they will come out with FF sooner rather than later, but when is anyones guess. I think the reasons are market driven more than anything.
There is a lot of talk along the lines of "I talked to a Nikon rep and he said..." going around. One thing I'm sure of is that the Nikon reps don't know anything more than the general public about what Nikon will or will not release. Nikon keeps these things close to the vest knowing that if it got to the reps, it would be public.
Nikon rep: "Don't tell anyone I told you this but...."
I guess we'll know when Nikon wants us to know. |

I suspect the "not interested" is just marketing - cause they would say that if it were true or if they were developing one so it's just a marketing answer. :-)
I believe they have a number of crop lenses, so it would seem less likely but it's certainly possible to run 2 lens line-up's. The only people that know would not be talking, so the rest is just guesses.... |

I'd be really curious to know what Ken Rockwell would say when and if Nikon comes out with what he calls an "oversize" sensor... |

here's another good discussion on it. I guess the "rumor" was started by Nikon themselves at an asian press conference in April 2006 or so.

One idea that was posed, and would be awesome if they did it, is to allow for DX series lenses to be useable, but auto-detect and engage high-speed crop when they were on. This would be an awesome move.

| Honestly, I dont' care too much if the next Nikon flagship camera is full frame. What I really want, and there have been a few mulings about this, is a total module design reminescient of the F3. This would include modular digital backs, prisms, and what not. If Nikon can deliver a stellar body with modular pieces I think they will have a sure fire hit. Plus gives room in the future with new digital sensors by keeping the same body. |

i agree with this statement - just as what Canon did before they finally introduced dust-reduction system in the 400D, lol

I saw a FF nikon in the local used case ;-)
Oh you want a new one... Didn't nikon badmouth FF before and state they weren't going to make a FF camera? If they do that'll bring the prices down tho, it's prolly a good thing. |

Ill always be supportive of Nikon making a newer better camera. But I certainly hope that they wait til I have my current gear paid off before they go and render it obsolete.

Search on the dpreview.com in the D1/D2/D200 forum for posts by Thom Hogan. Whenever he is around you'll find the most reliable rumours. Fact is that Nikon has already build several prototypes with sensors from themselves, Sony and Fuji, these have been tested for a while and there is an 80% chance that Nikon will release its final choice (early) this year. Most of these discussions were between September and December of 2006.
As for the modular Nikon system. The most reliable rumour source for Canon is Paul Pope, also sometimes active at dpreview.com. I remember some posts from several years ago where he claimes to have seen this system from Nikon. But as it was a prototype there is no way to tell if it made it or will ever make it to the production phase. This was also in relation to the then yet to be released F6. But the F6 is not a camera that fits this idea, so I guess Nikon abandoned it.

he's been focusing on canon recently after having bought a 5d. he praises it with a lot of caveats. |

I wouldn't be surprised to see one in '07. The skuttlebutt is that it will be a D3. It matters not because I won't have the 9,000
dollars they'll want to charge for it. Til my D200 croaks I'm in business.
