Today my husband and I were out shopping and I have one of those really big tote bags on wheels that I use occassionally a the mall. I also take my camera everywhere I go, well today while shopping I put the camera bag into the tote bag on top of everything else in it.
We walk into this dollar store in the mall that has the policy of NO BACK PACKS. I've shopped there before and never had an issue before today. The cashier suddenly decideds to ask us for the tote bag, which at that moment my husband was carrying he got to hands it to her and she tells him just sit it there and walks away leaving it sit on top of the counter! I instantly lost it on her and told her if she has enough nerve to suddenly ask a regular customer for a tote bag she had better stand there and make sure no one walks off with it.
She gets smart with me and I asked her to call the manager up. I got even more upset when the manager says well tote bags are ok just not backpacks then when the cashier starts well its big enough to stick anything in it and the manager suddenly changes her opinion I walked over to the counter pulled my camera bag out of the tote bag opened it up and looked at her and said ok who is going to be responsible for this while I shop. The two of them were speechless before the manager say oh what is it some toy camera...I looked at her and said yeap the toy is worth over $1500 (along with all the little accessories and my wallet that are in the bag it was.)
By the time it was all over with I had the phone number for the corporate office and I called them to inform them how this store is handling large bags being carried into the store and I told them exactly what was in the bag and the way the store manager handled the whole thing. Of course the corporate office was very poliet about it and had the district manager call me.
As of tomorrow morning the store is no longer premitted to take any bags from customers...in other words corporate office heard the words DIGITAL SLR and they knew what it was and all they could think of is the money involved in replacing one along with the fact if something happened to it they could only imagine how much fun the press would have with a store taking a customers bag and then not taking proper care of it.
The final thing that happened between the district manager and myself is they are sending me a $50 gift certificate to get me to go back to the store, and tomorrow morning the policy of taking customers bags will end!
Moral of the story is Don't Come Between Me and MY Camera!
Now honestly I used to work retail and even I know things have to be done to stop shoplifting but if you are going to take customers bags you have to secure them!

Wow - that is some story, and way to go for sticking up for yourself. On principle, I'd vow never to shop at that store again, though. (All it takes is one bad experience for a company to lose the loyalty of their customers.) |

Truth is I was a repeat customer of that store, I usually am in there at least once a week so naturally I was offended that she asked for the bag in the first place. Will I shop in there again? I'm not sure. |

What really gets me is that this is a DOLLAR STORE. Yes, I realize that shoplifters will hit any store but you'd think that a) they'd be very unusual in a cheap store and b) the loss would really be minimal -- they can't be making much profit to begin with on individual items, it's probably almost all via bulk sales, and what one person could stick in a tote bag probably would cost them so little as to not be worth the hassle...
But yeah, if you're going to take bags, you take them and put them BEHIND THE COUNTER, not just walk away like a big doof. That was definitely worth calling a manager over. The manager being a bit of a dolt on top of it... yeah. You did the right thing. |

Good for you!
When I receive poor service I also make a point of taking it further - accepting it or shrugging ain't ever gonna be my style.
I stay polite but become more articulate and logical and occasionally put everything in writing.
Works wonders to a) write it down calmly and rationally and b) to point out potential grounds for lawsuits from future customers!

ahhh...dog food for a dollar? Thats gotta be the worst kind of dog food out there. Did you know that feeding your dog/cat grocery store food shaves an average of 1 1/2 year off their life. Just my 2 cents. |

Thanks for mentioning this. Pet food from pet stores is far superior than the stuff at supermarkets. The pet food and pet biscuits in supermarkets contain a lot of corn and the 'meat' often is just indigestible meat parts. Even if you buy a very expensive pet food, it still works out to a modest food budget for your pet and is nothing compared to all the love/loyalty/security you get from it in return. |

It just shocks me how many people buy Science Diet and grocery store foods. Just look at the ingredients. Byproducts, byproducts, byproducts, and corn. Thats just gross. Most dogs have a mild allergic reaction to corn and people don't notice. A good overall food is either Eukanuba or Nutro. Don't know what pet stores carry this food but Wellness, Propac or Natural Balance are soooo good for your dog. Give your dog/cat a good life. Feed them a good food. Not just cheap stuff. I work at a pet store. Trust me. |

As a side note...did you know that Purina and Science Diet pay/bribe their vets to promote their food. Just cause you hear it in a commercial doesn't mean its good. I feed my chihuahua Natures Variety. Its the closest thing you can get to an all meat diet in a kibble form. All natural ingrediants. HUMAN grade food. Im sorry im so passionate about this. Good food, not cheap food. |

I'm with you on this. I use a product called authority for my cats, which has real chicken in it! not byproducts. I think I drove my husband crazy cause we went all around petsmart, and only found two products without byproducts. ONLY 2.. for the dogs there's many more, but cats seem to get the short end of the stick.

Sorry about the problem with the store OSS. I understand about the camera, it is a part of you! :)
Re: the dog foods... my dog nearly died this past February. Turns out the Science Diet was, in part, killing him due to the corn allergy. He also has a copper storage issue in his liver (mild but can accumulate and kill him) and processed dog foods are high in copper content. I did the research after pulling him thru - he had a sub normal temperature, and extreme dehydration after he lost his "cookies" all over the floor all night (it had finally just become too much for his system over time - he was just turning 1 year old).
I now make homemade dog food according to Boston Terrier and Natural Dog Food resources and consulting with the vet! Good thing he is a toy dog! HA HA! If he had been a 150 lb dog, I'd be broke by now!
He just went to the vet again last week for a check up.. first time since the beginning of March. The vet is very pleased with his muscle tone, eye sparkle, and overall health, and said I'm doing everything right!

You can say everything you want about the pet store foods but when you got a dog like mine you got no choice you buy what he will eat. I tried several of the pet store foods, and only thing he will eat is the cats Hairball food from the pet store but he goes nuts over this cheap stuff from the dollar store... |
