I'm an absolute beginner and I'd like to have some suggestion regard the basic lens necessary to... start!
I've a Canon eos 400D with kit lens 18-55mm.
Reading in the forums I've understood that a 70(75)-300mm is a "must" and a 50mm f/1.8 could be useful and ... cheap!
Thanks in advance for your help

I wouldn't say it's a "must", though it is a good choice. I'm saving for the 70-200 f2.8 IS but that's kinda pricey. I can't justify getting a long lens without the large aperture because I do sooo love low light shots.

You may want to consider this lens. I have it on my 30D and never take it off. I keep my 50mm f1.8 on my Rebel.... Great combo for what I need.

Agreed ... since getting that lens for Christmas, it has NEVER come off of my camera ... the 50mm f/1.8 is a great portrait lens for $80 ish ...it was the first one I got after buying my camera ...

WOW! really quick answers!
Thanks a lot, Pamelasue and Palmetto!
I agree about the importance of a large aperture but also I know that price increase dramatically so your (both) proposal for a 28-75mm f/2.8 sound as an interesting... compromise

Note that there's a substantial difference between the 75-300 and the 70-300. The 70-300 is a newer lens and much-improved over its predecessor. The 50mm f/1.8 is a must (because it's so cheap) and the Tamron 28-75 might as well be. ;-)

Scalvert, thanks for your specification.

Well, 50mm f/1.8 is pratically taken.
Harder is the choice between a tele or 28-75 where the needs and especially the price can influence sensibility the decision.
A tele zoom actually appears to me as more necessary and I note that budget ones are 75-300mm with aperture f/4-5.6: by threads Sigma APO DG version seems quite good.
Larger aperture or Image Stablization mean prices 4-5 times higher.
Can have a sense a shorter zoom (e.g. 70-200mm) with a good compromise performances/price?
