I've found quite a lot of Nikon D80's too. They look like a pretty good, solid camera. Anyone have any experience with that camera?

The D80 is more expensive than the 350D or even the 400D. If you could afford that, you could probably afford the 400D or especially the 350D! Yes, the D80 is good, but at that price, I think I'd be hard pressed between it and the Pentax K10D. Hey, are you sure there are D80 selling on eBay at your budget???

Those auctions have a long way to go.
To get a better pulse on auctions, use the advanced feature and select completed auctions, show all so there no price range limits and you will find they sell for a lot more than what you are currently seeing. Typically I saw buy it now sales on the D80 body only at $880.00

Brad -- yeah, I just saw that. I suppose that I got really excited about seeing them in my price range, that I didn't even stop and look at the completed auctions.

Man, buying a new camera is really hard.

*edit*
Does anyone have feedback on the D50?

it's not a bad dSLR at all, but depending on your type, you might be itching to upgrade not long after you get a D50 because it is, afterall, an entry level dSLR from Nikon. May I ask, why do you want a dSLR? Or more specifically, what feature about a dSLR that appeals most to you RIGHT NOW?

The D50 is pretty much directly comparable to the original Rebel.

Well, I've been using a Sony P&S for a while now, and I would like to upgrade to get into the manual digital thing.

I really like the idea of being able to completely control what is happening, and control all of the settings.

The basic D50 body alone is in the $350-400 range new, with an occasional D50 & kit lens running in the mid-$400 range.
With a $280 budget, you aren't going to find what you are looking for.

If all my gear vanished, and had only $280 to spend, I wouldn't hesitate getting another E-10 - really!

then to satisfy your requirements should be easy :)
I think the D70 should be around your budget if you look for it as a used unit.

I will definitely look for a D70 then, and see what I can find.

Brad, the only thing that worries me with the E10 is that it is pretty low megapixels (even lower than my last camera).

Thanks you guys for pointing me in the right direction, and putting up with my newbness.

also, what's the difference between the D70 and D70s? I think I read something about it being a firmware update?
