Cna someone give me VERY SPECIFIC directions and a street address for where we will be meeting? I will most likely take the subway into NYC (what's the best way to pick it up from the Jersey side?) and need to know EXACTLY where to get off, what exit to take from the station, and where to go from there.
Thanks,
Terry

sorry but whats GCS? To get to Columbia from a subway you want to get on the 1/9 train... the stop is 116th st. but if your going uptown then you have to get off at 110 and walk six blocks, if your going downtown however you can get off at 116th. email me if you need more directions! shutterfly,
when you arrive in grand central, you are going to have to get on the cross town shuttle to times square and then pick up the 1 or the 9 train going uptown to get to columbia university... hope that helps!

It'd be easier. Rather expensive, but easier.
We're meeting at the Low Library, near 116th Street and Broadway.

Ok, so I had a cool get together with some friends from DPC. We just got back 2 hrs ago, so here's the gist.
Woke up 6:30am, Frisca (Pam) and I got ourselves together and took off, map and directions in hand. We arrived at Columbia Univ. at 10:50, got to Low Library and waited. We saw ClubJuggle (Terry) 10 mins or so after that, and Ridergal (Talya) soon after. Shutterfly couldn't make it, so we went to Talya's for a glass of water and some a cool break from the noon sun. Eventually we went to this place called Koronets for some HUGE pizza slices. They were literally a foot long and the whole pizza was maybe 2' diameter. It was crazy, so we tooks pics of them (of course). Mag (Kollin) and Albright1 (Anita) showed up around 1:15 and we started the NYC tour.
Our NYC trip took us around Times Square and eventually to Central Park. We went on a carousel, saw some people kissing on the rocks, met a cute bug eyed dog and had some great laughs. After the carousel ride, Mag and I were walking away and turned around to the group. We saw/felt this HUGE storm coming and looked up - the clouds were BLACK right above us. The day went from 85 and hot to just about to thunderstorm in 2 minutes.
We hid under this bridge where a guy was playing guitar and singing. More and more people joined us once the huge raindrops started to fall and it got pretty packed under there. Two drains were taking care of all of the storm and one started to back up. Terry noticed it and went towards the other end. The other side was doing better, but our side eventually started backing up on both sides. Now, smart people would have gone and kicked the leaves out from there or something, but we just waited. It started to feel like a Bruce Willis movie, with the water seeping into the tunnel and getting deeper and deeper. Eventually we're all in the very center, huddled like about-to-be-drowned-rats when Terry sees the OTHER side backing up. With room running out, some of us (all the DPCers and some of the others with us) decided to head to higher ground. We ran to this Dairy or something in Central Park and there were almost as many people and almost as much water there, but at least some things to climb on and hide out. The storm hadn't let up and our feet and backs and heads were soaked. I left the umbrella in the car, cuz I'm that smart.
The storm let up around 4:15, just as SatelliteSpeck (Jen) was getting out of work. We all walked to find food and eventually (after much discussing of good vs expensive prices in NY) settled on this little pasta restaurant. The food was great, the 7 of us took lots of group shots around the table (guys, girls, all, individuals) and we had horny bread and meals. Full and satiated, we again motored out. We had to split up as Kollin and Anita wanted to head back to DC early. Talya went with them, and so Pam, Terry, Jen and I went to the Empire State Building.
Lemme say this: JEN ROCKS. She made a couple calls and we went up the Empire State Building in like 5 minutes. No lines, no waiting, no security - just boom, boom, boom. We were there. We were SO VIP'd on that visit. It was "the treatment." We took our pics just about sunset time - filling mem cards was so NOT a problem. It was a bit hazy up there, but we managed ok.
After the Empire State Building, the four of us headed to Times Square for some after-dark shots. We all were taking very different shots, I think. It was strange to have to pause for others taking pics, as it's usually ME people are stopping to wait for pics. Anyways, we made it to this place called Birdland, a club where we met Jen's very nice and friendly hubby Mike. He was very very kind and drove us to our cars - we were going to have Terry take us to our hostel for the night.
After the ride, Jen and Mike were on their way and Terry called Talya to see if she wanted a quick visit. It turned into a 90 minute visit, talking to dpc'ers in the chatroom and just generally looking at pics, talking about photography and stuff - very quiet, relaxing stop on our trip. Finally, Talya looked like she was going to pass out and Pam and I felt like we were. Terry had a 90 min drive home, so we all parted. Terry took us to the hostel, where we literally checked in, dropped our stuff and slept 8 hrs.
Pam and I walked around Columbia's outskirts, grabbed breakfast at a street fair, did a bit of shopping and headed out.
All in all, I gotta say this was one hell of a cool trip. I hope all the DPC gtg's are like this! It was amazing and to NYC GTG'ers, I can't WAIT to see you ALL again. Thanks for a REALLY REALLY great time!
