Hi
have to say this is one of the best sites on the net. It is a little sectioned into an in crowd but i dont mind that, its the same in the real world. The people i have spoken with on here have always been polite and nice to me.
As posted on antoher thread i was away for months and finally had the chance to get back into it yesterday, and was not surprised that no one really rememberd who i was or that i was even gone. Mind you no one even welcomed me back? not at all and i was surprised at that.
I will remain a paid member and post as much as i can but plan on being part of the community much more in 2007.
@ Buzz, glad to hear your better.

I have to admit, that I have disappeared a couple of times for up to a week at a time...and apart from one person...no one sent me any PM's or came looking for me. (Mind you, I think a few out there were probably planning a celebration of my disappearance...LOL!!)
I think because this is such a huge community that no matter how well known you are...sometimes the quicksand gobbles you up...even for a little while...and when you finally clamber your way back to the surface, you find that life really hasn't changed...it has still continued without you. Kind of like those day time soapies...you know...the ones that run for years. You can watch it everyday for months...and then suddenly you go away for a while. When you come back, within the first five minutes you have caught up...nothing much happened while you were gone and no one is none the wiser that you even left. This is sad...but it is reality.

I'll second what Judi (and others) have said. It's a large community and recently gotten larger it seems. I've been gone several times and life went on as if I never existed. The dynamics are a bit different online than with "real friends". ;-)
And one thing about any of the "in" crowds or cliques on this site is that none of them are exclusive in any way. Anyone can jump into any group without an issue - and even without an initiation ritual. :) The cliques center around common interests - as it should be. Buzz you are welcome to join the Poor Saps. :)
Sorry you were sick, but glad you've recovered. |

Exception - Team Suck is sort of exclusive - most folks who are really good don't want to join, and depending on the fearless leader's mood, you may have to write a 50 word essay on why you suck. Or you can knit something - that's acceptable too.
Edit to add that we're really friendly, though, and will excuse the occasional ribbon, as long as it doesn't become a habit.

Oh that's nothing, try becomming a Pirate! I had to get a wooden leg, a parrot, a funny accent, night vision, and if I get a ribbon I have to walk the plank!
Har!

I'll shout up here briefly as I think its apt.
When I went into hospital in December a thread was started here on DPC by my best friend (from the "real world"). If he hadn't been a member here on DPC I am sure nothing would have appeared in the forums. It's only down to my friendship with him that others here got to know I was sick.
In the case of stdavidson the same thing happened, 2 of his friends began a post here on DPC and things went from there.
If anything both of these things show to me the kind, caring, thoughtful side of members here on DPC. When both these threads were started plenty of people stepped up to post in them. I posted in the stdavidson thread, having never even seen his username before and many people I had never spoken to around this site posted in the thread Andi started for me.
I don't belong to any 'clique', I feel I am very lucky to have the best friend I do and to belong to a site that when someone in need is shown to them they step up and help in anyway they can.
There that's my piece said on this whole thing :o)
I am sorry to hear you were ill buzz and hope you are a whole lot better now. |

I was gone for a month. Hospital plus personal time off. Some of my closest friends did not find out until after. I can not expect DPC ers to pick up on my absents. |

I am still trying to remeber who BuzzRock is.
:) just kidding. But I do understand your point.
I don't talk to many people on here so know one would know I have been having headaches for the last 6 months that have been getting increasingly worse and now I have to have an MRI. So I can understand where that is my fault for not building any relationships here. But everyone should know who you are Buzz, heck even I do. But it still didn't make me check on yah.

What's all the fuss about? I disappear for months at the time and then reappear voting, entering challenges, participating in forums, etc. No one ever asks where I am.
It's not that no one cares, it's just that some people go through natural cycles when they do and don't participate. Just because someone is not participating doesn't necessarily mean we should raise a red flag.
Hell, if I started getting PM's everytime I dropped off of certain sites for extended periods of time, THAT would tick me off... I have a mother and don't need several hundred more.
What is nice is that I know that if I ever need anything, this is a community that I can comfortably come to and ask for assistance (and would probably get it). |

I took a few weeks off from the challenges recently and no one noticed. However I have come to find that I should never be shocked when people who do not know me, do not care about me. After all This is the internet, If it were the local pub down on the corner and my face goes missing for a week or two, Someone would probably yell out Hey where is whats his face haven't seen him around here for awhile. But in a forum such as this with 1000's of topics to comb through you could go missing here without actually leaving. Some people avoid certain topics and may just not notice that you are not posting in them. I wouldn't worry about it too much Dude. Just be happy your healthy again and if you really want to get back at everyone for not noticing you were gone Win a couple of ribbons. That will work.

Sorry to hear you were sick.
This may be a bit harsh, but really, you expect that in any internet community, people should notice that you've been gone for a while? Everyone has their illnesses, their personal losses, their real life tragedies that go on unnoticed. Unless you post it yourself "I'm sick and going to the hospital", "it's my birthday" or, like some members, have a personal relationship with other members, no one is going to notice. It doesn't mean people don't care, it simply means they don't know.
Through reading older threads, this can be a great community for those in need of compassion and support, friendship, or simply photographic inspiration and education.
Don't be so offended!
Edit to add - my hubby is turning 35 on the 17th!

I think you're talking about apples and oranges....grapes even.
a) sure this site had an active thread when one well known member disappeared. Contributing to that was that friends and family who knew that person in real life and were also on these forums couldn't get a hold of said individual. It was mysterious and not simply so and so is in the hospital.
Those friends posted an inquiry publicly...
b) in the recent case of shutterpug, she herself posted publicly and there was a response. there is also the tip jar situation...when people see money in a tip jar they're more likely to tip. likewise, when people see people donating they're more likely to donate too.
c) frankly, a hospital stay is a common thing...with the thousands of members we have I am sure several are in the hospital every year. To trash this community for not being up in arms. Well, you could have posted you were going to the hospital. Or contacted a friend on DPC via real life means and had them post. You might haven't gotten some support and stuff. BUT REALLY...what could we do? Even if we knew you were in the hospital...well, we'd know where you are? there isn't much to do but hope the doctors do right.
There's no search to undertake. Not like sending a little bit of $ via paypal for heat money is going to help. That said, if most people came on and mentioned their heating systems all failing I'd have been like "man that sucks". But Shutterpug being in Alaska, American's idea of the coldest of the cold kind of makes people go "Youch....last place I'd want to be without heat!" And there was more inclination.
Frankly, many people acted with concern...not because these people were popular. (Right now I can't even recall the name of the guy who got lost.) But really more so in how things unfolded and mainly in the fact that people felt there were ways they could help. Be it flyers, scouring the web, sending a bit of $, or prayers.

If we are going to see this rant keep on returning to the top of the rant forum (there appear to be a lot of ways of saying the same thing), then please would a moderator correct the spelling/punctuation in the title - for some reason, it really makes my eyes hurt.
Now - spelling - that's a proper rant.
