I would love to post a few but e-mail is easier for me i do have a "my digital photo portfolio? But cant seem to post? I would love advise on editing and all round?

Too much glare in the upper left detracts from the couple.
If they like how THEY look I'd make a mask for the whole background, and darken it (and maybe blur it) to make the couple the focus of attention. |

| thanks Paul but she thinks she looks fat and didnt like her nose squished to his lol i think the one i gave her I cropped out as much as I could of that glare . What type of mask quick? and which tool do you use to select only the back ground? |

I think I can give you some advice on wedding photography. I used to be portrait photographer in the Las Vegas area. I've got a website of a wedding I took pictures of posted, if you would like to see them. Any assistance or advice I can offer just let me know. Below is a link to the wedding I took pictures of. The pictures are viewed as a tumbnail, and can be viewed at the full resolution by clicking on the picture.

If you're going to do any serious masking, retouching, or dodge/burn-type operations you "must" get a graphics tablet -- a 4x5 $99 (US) one from Wacom will be fine. I just create a new channel and paint on a soft-edged mask with the paintbrush (I select and fill the big areas in the middle). I did a big job that way a few years ago and just stuck with the technique. |

| I got one Paul but I dont seem to be using the pen too much do you increase the size little by little as you go? I have been using the extract filter to do this with little sucess creating a new channel is something i would be a total dumb ass about? |

Rogerspaul - If a woman doesn't like a picture, 99% of the time (or more) its because she thinks she looks fat. The best thing to do about that is easy. Lie like a rug!!
Honestly she's a nice looking girl, but I leafed thru several of the pictures and it seems like there is just one or 2 minor things that didn't get captured just so. With 4 or more people in the picture, that can be difficult to get everyone in good poses, yet relaxed enough to give you the genuine smile. I try to make people laugh. Right after the initial burst is a good time to get them IF they don't cover their mouths instinctively. #18 is good. I looked thru a few. If she doesn't like the nose smashed, well I don't have a good answer for that one.
I don't want this to sound bad, but it might and honestly I don't mean it bad, but what kind of rapport do you have with these folks? are they good friends or are they friends of a friend? They all look very uncomfortable for many of the shots, so that's why I'm asking. Seems if they were your good friends, they would be a little more relaxed. They seem like they are forcing poses and smiles.
Well, I dont want to break all the bad news, so I'll save some for someone else. J/K :P

I thought that #4, 9, 12, 14 and 18 were very good.
I think #5 is a very good study, but the glass reflections need to be cleaned up in PS.
In #8 she certainly doesn't look fat. Those trees in the bg against the heads are a bit of a problem, though
Finally, I really like #13. However, I'd like to crop out the pleasant lady on the left.

| thanks everyone just a co-worker and i do have some of her being herself smoking a cigarette and more relaxed how many shots should i give them all to run through themselves or should i pick out the ones I think are good some are bad that i dont want anyone to see and just learn from them. I hope from what i do have they are Happy how many do you usually provide for a couple? This was a freebie I just wanted to get a little experience and she couldnt aford a "real" photographer. |

that was the first thing I thought was her arm looked big, now aside from the noses being squished which i don't think is that big of a deal i would crop it like this
to get rid of the 'arm issue'

If she thinks she looks fat then you shouldn't try to fix it, no amount of fixing will make her look thin to her, she will dilike that photo forever. I agree she does look larger in that photo then the others, I think part of it the area under her chin.
Let them see all of the shots, you'll be surprised, what you thought stank, they'll love.
I think the one where he is knealing and she is standing is the best, the one where I used the diffuse filter on it, it is good without it too, did you get my critiques and changes via e-mail?

If you are using Photoshop, just go to the Channels palette and select New Channel from the drop-down menu, or create any selection and save it (creates the new channel for you). You have a choice of whether the painted area is the masked ot selected area, but it doesn't matter since you can easily invert any selection.
I select the bulk of the area with the lasso tool and fill it, then paint in the edges with a soft-edged paintbrush. Adjust the brush size and opacity and the zoom factor based on the detail and complexity of the image at the specific location you're masking. |

That was a much better crop. There is another of them kissing that I thought was better though. The issue with this first one is a) the angle and b) the focal length. These two combined makes for a distorted effect that is unflattering in portraiture.
Good that you had an opportunity to practice - that's all it takes.
I like the tones of the black and whites. Keep at it! |
