wooooah, what you use that guinea pig for?
01/15/2007 05:38:33 PM · #77
My wife says she uses the Guinea pig for toilet paper when she runs out. Then the pugs lick it clean.

We'd love to come up there and share your house with you, but I doubt my wife wants to move in with someone else (we've lived with both my parents and her parents at one time or another). We much prefer to live on our own. Maybe we can be neighbors?

sure - there is a very nice home at the end of my road for sale right now. They're only asking $229,000 for it. :P It is a very nice looking home.

I feel like a huge jinx though right now so you may not want to be around me. Today I arrived to work only to find out that within 5 minutes of me driving the one stretch of highway from my home there was a horrible accident. The road is now closed - 2 people dead, and one other who we are treating here at the hospital with a badly fractured femur.

They didn't happen to hit an oil slick did they?
01/15/2007 07:56:24 PM · #80
We'd love to move up there, but I doubt we could afford the move. Your hospital isn't looking for EMT-B's that are also Fire Fighter II qualified???? Think they'd pay for our move, and a downpayment on the house?

We had an ice/sleet/rain storm this afternoon and only one accident with minor injuries. The worst we've had today was a construction site accident with a possible dislocated hip. *shrug* Not much considering the road conditions.

Wow, real estate's cheap up there! I guess it makes up for it with the cost of everything else?

Nathan you'd be surprised....there are many job openings here and a lot of places do help pay relocation expenses.

Alaska's full of 'em. Amateur bums too, so you can work your way up :-)

Just now noticed this thread. Sorry to hear about all of that.

So many of you here have pm'd me, sent me cyber hugs and good luck wishes - and an amazing bunch of you dropped bucks into my paypal account (I still am in shock over that!) I just want to thank you all and let you all know if i can ever do anything to help you in return please don't hesitate to ask.

A small update as to the situation:
I was able to get a snow removal company to come clear the rest of the ice and snow from my roof today. So for now the fuel tank and lines are free from getting slammed again by ice slabs falling off the roof. Tomorrow I will be going to HomeDepot to buy some 2x4's and plywood so I can construct a protective frame/top to protect them for the future. I was hoping to get the contaminated snow/ice out of here, but since the guys who cleared the roof dumped a bunch of the roof snow on top of it, then spread it around I fear they may have made that job impossible to do by shoveling. I may have to just wait and see what EPA demands I do. Just have to wait for them to make contact with me.
The fuel smell in the house has decreased greatly. It should go away soon - at least that is what I am hoping for. The ER doc said that I should continue to crack the windows a tad when I can to air it out faster.
The plumbers return tomorrow to finish the water line work. I have had water back, but they still needed to correct a few things.

that's about all I have to update for now. I'm just happy to be able to shower and stay warm again, and thanks to the generous wonderful photogs on this site I wont have to sell my camera gear to pay off the deductibles on the 2 homeowners claims. I guess now I owe you guys some decent photos to look at. Most of my stuff is just so so, but I'll work on improving.

Hey Puggers, it seems to me that both incidences were caused by the same weather event... maybe you can get out of two deductibles?

unfortunately they happened in the reverse order of what could have otherwise been tied together. Had the fuel line breakage occurred first I could have claimed that being without heat led to the pipes freezing. But, I had already filed the claim on frozen pipes 5 days prior to the warm up that sent the ice careening off the roof onto the fuel lines. I like your thinking though :P

Happy to know that things are on the right way now.
I have been following this thread and was waiting as many of us for more news.
I'm sorry I couldn't help you , my car broke , 700 $ after it seems to work but it still needs around 350 $ to be fine (a change of something I don't know the name in english) , so no birthday celebration at the end of the month , well no matter I'm happy to still have a car.

Back to you I'm really glad to know that you and your pets are more safe now. Quite good news !

dang Mambe - what do ya mean sorry you couldn't help? I first posted just to vent and get a few cyber hugs as I was feeling overwhelmed. Each person who has wished me well - without anything more - has helped me immensely, you included!
Sorry to hear about you car troubles. I had trouble with my truck at the start of all this. It really sucks being without wheels. I hope yours gets fixed soon. When is your birthday? We can have a cyber party here on DPC for ya!

Linda,
I feel that I speak for many of us, that we are very happy to hear that things are gradually getting back to normal for you and family.
I am glad that you gave us an opportunity to help out.

Is living in Alaska in the winter "normal?" : )

roflmao - I'm starting to think there is NO normal here. But yes, Alaska does stay inhabited through the year, including winter.

You're very nice ! I'm always surprised with the support of DPC users . I've talked about you with my husband , he too was sad for your very bad luck.
What does not kill makes stronger of course but always at a price !
I think that you have demonstrated that you're a strong woman.

A cyber party would be very cool and cheap !!! See you all the 30th january !

OH my ... oh my ... oh my ... what an INCREDIBLE community here.

I had to have a cry myself! ... and it has been a while for this old man!

Thank you all SO much for fortifying my faith in humanity. The fact that I just got a blue shirt a few days ago from a total stranger half way around the world added to the poignant moment I had after reading these posts.

UPDATE:

The plumbers finished all the repairs today, and the fuel got fixed that day so now I'm okay - as long as there are no more disasters!
The plumber decided since he does not know first hand...only by what I told him, that there was so many gallons of diesel he is not going to call EPA on me. I still have to remove the contaminated snow before it melts, but it wont be quite as costly as what EPA could do to me. I've decided the best way to deal with the snow is to scoop it into large plastic drums until spring, The fuel should come to the top when the snow melts, and then I can burn the fuel off. I'll also burn the ground where the snow has been sitting since the spill in case any has seeped down to ground level. The total of the bills for both the plumbing and heating came to almost $3000. I sure hope the bad luck cloud floats away from me and my home for the rest of the year.

So glad things are looking up, Linda. Stay warm.

I want pictures of the fire for my collection. :) I think you can also soak up any remaining fuel with live water foul. ;-)

Glad things are getting back on track, Linda.
