Hi Brian
I want to shoot my card shot tonight too. Do we just do a head shot - then John plays with it - or do we do goofy things in the spirit of the team name? I would imagine the file dimension would be around 120 or so...

i think that goofy and fun is fine... my preference for mine is either me shaving with an axe (my portfolio photo) or:

Thanks for posting - I had a good laugh after a long day of no photo opportunities. I am just south of Buffalo, NY along Lake Erie and it's about as dreary as it could get. I just can't get myself outside. Thankfully, I have no school tomorrow. |

Anyone have an idea for battle of the sexes? I just got one - kinda clever; we'll see. |

I am skipping battle of the sexes this time around. I tried to do a panning shot of the salt truck as it came by yesterday but it was more of a stop action shot. LOL With the ice storms I am lucky to be getting anything OTHER than ice! Though they have turned out pretty interesting.
quite a few more in my portfolio under winter wonderland.
I have more coming too!

Panning How to, I haven't done it yet.
I thought the weather was bad-raining. In Sundays Plain Dealer newspaper on a section cover some jrnalist took a panning shot of a mountainbike splashing water/mud, in a race in Strongsville. If I knew of the event I'd have been there.
I would suggest to always look at previous challenges and find similar cameras use and see their settings and email some if it's not listed. And/Or also check the settings of the last Panning Challenges top-10. Yes you follow the subject, preferrably on a tripod. The ones with a handle are called panning heads, probably for that reason. Several of the last winners used the same 70-200VR vibration reduction lense that I have. These $1600 lenses can be used hand held.
I would reccommend to try a shutter/priority mode at about 1/60th sec. and see what the camers chooses for the aperature. Then go into Manual mode and try some shots of, maybe cars going down a road, at higher and lower Aperature then the Tv-shutter-priority mode reccommended. Some of the last ones had even used f/16, but every scene is different in weather conditions, lenses used, and zoom-levels. It's just digital-film, so shoot a lot and experiment.
Go Team!
We are all here after a recent discussion. Each week they pick the top four scores out of a possible 14. So quality instead of quantity is great, especially if it land a top 10. We should try to see if we can get 4-5 people to shoot each week, if we get less then 4 then a zero is probably used for the average. I'm entering the "Battle with my wife" and Panning or Match-2nd choice. I have to eat and shoot, now.
Player Cards
I've seen a lot of "Player Card" just like real playing cards bust shots to head shots, mostly goofy, many "head gear", also send a small color swatch (square) of you favorite color shade to use. Before or by this coming Friday-midnight, so I can put them together. I will post Asim's this week, for an example when itss ready.

I don't have any special equipment for doing a real panning shot.
I have pulled it off before but only by accident.
Maybe, if we get snow tonight I can try again with the plow! LOL
That could be interesting!

Teresa,
Hang in there with your weather. Buffalo, NY (were I am) got a whippin' in October. Be VERY careful using generators - the fumes can kill you if not ventilated right. Folks often scoop up generators without knowing how to use them in power failures.

so i wasn't able to do any of my "battle" ideas (busy weekend, lack of props), and with a busy day tomorrow and tuesday i'm worried about my panning shots. i was especially worried since i know teams are finalized at midnight tonight, but was relieved to see that the official season starts with the challenge announced on 1/29. i'm still gonna aim to submit for something this tuesday (and possibly even tonight, even though i probably shouldn't), but i was worried that i would be forced to submit something subpar or else end up with a goose-egg in week one. fortunately my schedule is less hectic after this week (famous last words, right :-) |

The idea wasn't even as good as I thought it would've been, but the lighting setup and technique I will use again. I counted ten pictures of the same object. So much redundant ideas. Mines a little better.
I submitted it at 11:58PM after downloading and editing a half hour before. I stayed up another hour fixing things up by dodging/burning, which I never really did before. It was easy and a helpful necessity. here is a link to a tutorial on that submitted today by Pedro Dodging and Burning in Photoshop. |

At least my battle scores have been growing.
That's a challenge that should have been easier to win in. if I spent the needed post processing time it may he been up a point.

Great Black Bananas, could've been a black and white challenge photo, too.
I suggest that when the competition starts we should all let each other know if we do, or do not, plan to enter a shot for a week. This would be to make sure we don't get a zero as one of the top four. That would only happen if 4 members didn't submit anything.
Even a mediocre photo close to meeting a challenge's description could probably get a 4.xxxx. If it's an excellent shot and only slightly meets the challenge, it can even win. |

dsterner: No it's not too late. As stated earlier I would like them by Friday so I can try to come up with some samples on the weekend. After that I will let anyone willing to edit or make sugestions.
Any shot you want can be used for your Players Cards, most of them include bust shots and head shots in any pose or props or head gear you like.
Let me know what you would like our team logo to be like? What to express? What objects to include? Style, motif, colors, anything is helpful.
A good link for recent examples of high rated shots that didn't really meet the challenge ("Pushed the envelope"). Thinking Outside the Box |

teresa, great shot! i liked it a lot, but didn't comment. i will now.
also, as far as tracking goes, my Best of 2006 entry is gain some points, it went from a 4.3 to above a 5.5 in about a week. hopefully as people compare and contrast, they'll continue to like it. i'd like to have this in my top 4 since i think it deserves it, especially since it was with a P&S camera.
i'll get my head shot done tonight. i have something in mind |

Thank you for your comments on Black Bananas. This is the one I should had put more elements in. A measuring cup of flour, mixing bowl, and a wooden spoon in the background might have helped it some. One of the comments said it needed more elements. My luck they would have said 'to busy'! (like my dirt entry!) LOL
Justamistere, does the image have to be a self portrait? Im so UN-photogenic. (I will if I have to though) hehe
