In the northern hemisphere (sorry about that - it's a form of dyslexia)it's winter. I'm wondering how this challenge would turn out differently if it were spring or summer. After three days of hard freeze here in the desert, I haven't seen a bird, bunny, coyote or anything else. Plants are dying in droves. Maybe I can get a shot of a bee. :op

If an animal looks likes it might be domesticated (cow, horse, dog, cat, etc.) or might be taken in a zoo (lion, tiger, hippopotumus, etc.)or some sort of "non-natural" environment (poisonous snake, rare animal, etc.) in the voter's view then you will take a scoring hit. But image quality can overcome that.
However, it is a valid assumption of a voter to assume that if it looks to good to be true, especially if taken during the challenge week, then it probably is not.
Use your best judgement chosing what to submit.

All I know is that I hiked for miles in knee deep snow looking for anything that moved and I didn't so much see a bird let alone a wild animal. Looks like all the wildlife shots from Colorado will be from the zoo! I did take a photo of ice and snow though. |

Head up to the Hogback, Boom, up close to 70. The elk are all over the place up there right now. |

Thanks for the advice. I am telling you Castlewood Canyon is usually full of deer, but there wasn't a track in site for miles. |

I haven't been out there since I was a kid. Is it normally pretty good for wildlife? Roxborough is usually pretty good for deer and Waterton the same for Bighorn. |

It is beautiful. Lots of running waters a few falls, rattlesnakes. Usually we see Vultures, Eagles, Deer and lots of small furry things like rabbits ect... Today there was not even a trace of anything anywhere. |

A horse is typically considered domesticated (yes, I know there are wild ones).
IF you can fool me with your zoo shot, then great. IF you can't, then you get voted down. We have too many international shooters for me to assume that a cheetah is in a cage and not out in the wild. Now if I see snow on the ground, well...you get the point. No fake sculpted terrain, no logs and tires set up to be interesting to the monkeys. But if you can get a nice shot of an animal, I say go for it.

There are wild horses still out there. But I'm gonna guess that more than a few will vote you down. Especially if it/they look domesticated. |

My parents have about 100 - 200 deer feeding off of the hay they purchased for our horses. My dad said that if you go out about 3:30 pm and wait half an hour they won't run away. Of course home is 3 hours away...
In response to Doc I'd agree. A lot of us don't have wild life right handy. If you can fake it with a zoo picture and create the whole "willing suspension of disbelief" then I'll go for it. If it look fake? I'd take a thousand tame ponies in the bush any day over a monkey in a tire. Just me 2 cents. (6 cents Canadian).

So if I got a horse pic like that probably minus the fence it'd be cool?

We use to go out there to play in the water. Probably been almost thirty years since I been there. Was open land back then, as far as I know. I'm going to have to get back out there sometime soon. |

Minus the fence and add lots of winter hair. Wild horses don't get barned and consequently look a little wooly. :)
*Edit: Unless they are in Australia in January...

Hmmm, only 1 insect shot in the top 70. That's very surprising given how many macro shooters we have on this site. Is there a reason for that? I'm wondering if people stayed away from that because of DNMC fears. That one shot did score a 7 though.

Ok, I didn't read the description. It doesn't list insects. |

I would consider insects "wildlife"...as a voter anyway. Insects are very much part of the natural ecosystems in the wilderness. I am wondering now, what about fish...divers with underwater equipment must surely be allowed a fair chance in this challenge?

I don't know. I kinda think that it's fair that some people DON'T have wildlife available. I mean, look at how many Aurora Borealis shots win, and that picturesque beach in Cali. How about the people with beautiful spouses for any portrait shooting?
We ALL have advantages and disadvantages as far as our locations and life situations go. That's just part of the game.
I think Wildlife should be WILDLIFE. To me, that doesn't include domestics, insects or zoos. (At least it shouldn't LOOK like a zoo shot).
:) :) :) :) :)

I must agree with Rob on this one....we all have situations that make some challenges easier than others...so be it...I think we should stick by the rules very strickly. No Zoo shots or insects....just my opinion.
