I wrote in response to Skip's thread on this, but actually I wanted to post one of a more general inquiry...

I will be in Manhattan for a meeting on Tuesday, the 16, which doesn't start until 7 pm. I can get there significantly earlier if anyone is available for a little ad hoc GTG.

I spoke with Scalvert about this and he mentioned the central park zoo being something he was interested in (though he didn't know if he could get off of work). I'm open to any shoot--as long as it's nearby (I'll have my laptop to carry around, so I won't be traveling light), I won't have wheels (taking the train), and I don't really know my way around NYC!

So let me know if anyone is interested in getting together in the afternoon sometime.

Sorry for the missed opportunity Nick. Some other time!

So it looks like I am just going to arrive a few hours early then. I will check out B&H which is near Penn station (where I arrive), and maybe the International Center for Photography Museum (ARGH. Just looked it up and it's closed until Jan 19).

Other suggested places to go within walking distance of Penn station?

Is it worth going to the top of the Empire State building at Sunset to shoot? I haven't been there in many years. Or is it too difficult to shoot from there?

Any suggestions welcome. I haven't been to NYC very often. But I think I need to stick with nearby venues.

Actually, most folks go to the Top of The Rock (Rockefeller Center) to shoot the sunsets. ;)

Thanks! I see they have "photographers" up there to capture your memory. I presume they don't hassle you about bringing your own professional level equipment? How about tripods? (I didn't say any info on the site except that they recommend reservations --do you think that's necessary? And it's not cheap ;))

There photographer isn't even anywhere that has a view. It's one of those illusion pictures where you get to look like your helping to build the place.
You own gear is no problem, but don't expect to use a tripod at all.

Bring a tabletop tripod. There is a place you can set it.

Thanks fr the info.

I have my Sunpak Digipro CS compact tripod--it will fit in my bag; it's not a table top, but it might look like one if I don't extend it (It's 14" high when taken down).

(Though if you don't think I can use that there, let me know, and I won't bring it. I'd like to travel as light as possible!)
