Geesh, I go do a little shopping (Ich habe ein tische und ein stool fur mein nahmaschine! I have a table and a chair for my sewing machine, I think) and I come back and Team Such has been chatty!

Raish, I'm definitely not knocking the German way of driving. Indeed, it's very efficient. The lumberers like me stay in the slow lane except when absolutely necessary to pass, and the zippers fly down the road at warp speed. Kind of a beautiful thing to see, really. And I LOVE German engineering. The windows are things of beauty and function both. The washing machines and dishwashers don't have hot water feeds, they have heaters. What a neat concept. The dryer isn't vented, it collects the water in a container you empty after the dryer's finished. Now granted, all this takes a bit more time - washer runs about an hour and a quarter on the rapid cycle.

In another post at some point, however, I will express my opinion on the German's various and varied words for "the".

Kelli, yes, the military can be good about doing what they say. Or not. I'd say the Coast Guard, with it's limited slots, is willing to do what they say and follow through if they've offered her something along those lines. And as a "spy" in the Coast Guard, I'm betting a lot of what she'd have to do would be along the lines of interdiction - drug and people trade from the countries south of the US. I think it would indeed be an awesome opportunity.

Oh, and they are called card readers in the US, too. I forgot to tell Jeb about the RAW plus jpeg feature, so I'm glad someone else did. That really handy bit about using the jpeg for validation, especially.

I don't know about the Nikon - Jeb, you'll have to read up on it - but with the Canon you can also choose how you want that jpeg recorded. You can increase saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc, or shoot in black and white. The jpeg will be black and white (and may not be useful for validation if it's editing steps they want to recreate) but the RAW remains RAW - in color, no in-camera action on it at all.

Finally, Raish, where the heck are you anyway? I think we quite possibly need a Team Suck European Get Together at some point.

Oh yeah, sure... all chatty while I'm gone but I come back and what? No one says a peep...

Alrighty then, you get my rant on "the"... I will say that the one thing the English language offers to society at large is the single word "the". There's only "the", regardless of whether its used for the nominative case or the dative case, singular or plural, male or female. And English does not gender nouns. Nouns are neuter.

Now take German. Nouns have gender. Oddly enough, the word for "girl" (Mädchen) is masculine. Go figure. A table (tische) is male. If those things are subjects of a sentence, "the" is "der". If the subject of a sentence is a newspaper (Zeitung) which is female, then "the" is "die". And if the subject is actually gender neutral, book (Buch) for instance, "the" is "das". But it doesn't stop there, oh no... Based on what I heard while driving around today, there's the dative case. I've not yet quite deciphered that yet, but "die" becomes "der", and "der" becomes "dem", or something like that.

And "the" changes if the subject is singular or plural, too, I think.

"the" is a fine, fine word. Never underestimate its elegance.

I've studied some limited German, and I could never keep all the die, das and der straight. I hear your pain, sister :-) And then there's Japanese, with no word for "the" at all! I'll bet Svetlana could rant about the differences between Russian and English...and Norwegian, too.

What I wish is that some more people would give me die, das and der more 10's in these challenges, da?

keep in mind that joining any branch of the service means there is a very real chance that you will be dragged into combat, no matter what they tell you. The current U.S. policy is to deceive and overuse the volunteer army as much as possible to avoid the draft.

Just chiming in here with some trivial DPC stuff......8>)

Thanx to all who have helped me with this stuff....I think I'm at least making forward progress. You 'll have to extract the appropriate thanx as to the tips you gave.

I am fairly sure that I have done everything correctly to:

1. Get my entry validated
2. Get my entry critiqued
3. Get my next entries into the computer with a jpeg as well as the RAW file.....

I won't know 'til the gods tell me whether or not my pic is legit and a good pic!.....8>)

I have decided to sacrifice a virgin to the gods for their pleasure......unfortunately, since virgins are at a premium, I'm rethinking that to a ham and cheese on rye.

My point being that it was youse guys that steered me in the right direction to get all this accomplished.....THANK YOU!

Later.....I have housework to do.

10... 10... 10... i love you

I am not quite sure what to make of that!!!!!

Sorry if that all sounds (or is?) like patronising put-down.

Raish, the only patronizing put-down was your opening bit where you seemed unable to resist swatting at Americans. Could you please avoid that tone in this thread? I have my own problems with my country, but we've kept team suck pleasantly free of such swipes so far.

Since you raised the idea that more countries drive on the left, though, I got curious. I searched Google for "which side of the road" and discovered that more countries drive on the right, at least according to two sources. The first one even has this map:

OK, I need help coming up with a idea on Battle of the sexes, anybody have anything disposable no mater how far out of the box.
Sure me and my wife have had arguments, but battles, no. Most arguments deal with my wife thinking me too hard, and I thinking my wife too soft, ( it takes a little steal and a wood frame, along with padding and fabric to make a comfortable bed) and in the end the compromise is perfect.
Trust me I have had more problems with male associations than with any woman I have ever met, in fact I waited until I was 39 before I could find a woman strong enough to be my wife.
In essence the only battles of sexes I have been exposed to, was a tennis match between a moron and a ugly woman? and I hate tennis.

I'm kind of in the same position. We each do what we want, that's how we managed to stay married for so long. He was toilet seat trained by his mom before I got him. The only thing I could come up with is him not putting new toilet paper on the roll. I think that would make a pretty boring entry.

Alan, try various Google searches. I had no clue what to do for Pink Floyd, but I had an idea of a shot I wanted to take. I got lucky with Google and found a song title that matched. :)

We have other relatives in the coast guard, and they've been assuring us that she wouldn't be sent to Iraq. Now, if a war came to our shores, it could be a different story. The navy and air force were both actively recruiting her and she turned them down for that exact reason. They couldn't guarantee she wouldn't end up there.

While I'm not fond of swiping and sniping, there is no Team Suck censorship rule against disliking America. And definitely no silencing of poets.

Heh. I got a job offer from the NSA out of college. My birthday present to myself that year was to turn them down. I just couldn't see myself lying to everyone I knew about what I did. You were allowed to say you worked for the government, and then the State Dept. After that, you were supposed to ask why they were asking. Blech.

The two-day interview was very interesting, though. They flew maybe 20 of us in and we went through as a "class." My roommate was named Stephen King. :)

The lie detector test was especially interesting. They put me in a warm room with a big, cushy armchair and suggested I close my eyes so as not to be distracted. Think about it. College senior. Warm room. Cushy chair. Eyes closed. I asked what happened if I fell asleep. Without the slightest hint of humor, he told me I would fail. I didn't fall asleep, but I was so far relaxed that I could've confessed to killing my mother without setting anything off (my mom is still kicking, I'm happy to say). They also read my middle name wrong, which I caught. They apologized for the error, but it turned out they made that "mistake" with everyone. We guessed they wanted to be sure we were paying attention.

The normal job interview sessions were frustrating:
What do you do? I can't tell you.
Well, what would I do? I can't tell you.
Okay, you have my resume and my transcript. What on there looks like something that you think would resonate with the work here? I can't tell you.
Silence.
Um, okay. Thanks for your time.

We had two people who acted as more or less like camp counselors. When I explained that it would be tough to accept a job essentially ignorant of what it entailed, they admitted they lose a lot of good candidates that way. I understood why it had to be that way, but it didn't make it any easier to deal with. All they could say was that we would be protecting our country and getting to work on things that were years ahead of commercial technology (NSA, at least at the time, was all about electronics, signal interception, etc., not going out into the field - that was the CIA's job).

Probably the funniest thing happened a couple of years later. First, you have to know that there's a town where many residents work for the NSA. My brother and a friend were visiting, and they were going to visit his uncle, who lived there. When he said where they were going, I asked whether his uncle worked for the NSA. When he came back, he said his uncle wanted to know how I knew where he worked. :)

One thing I've picked up while living here in DC is that you don't ask what would normally be engaging questions once people say they work for the Dept. of Defense or the State Dept. Or anywhere in the federal gov't, for that matter, if the first answer or two is vague. It just makes the other person uncomfortable, forcing them to tell you they can't say or to lie to you.

Edited to add that this concludes my longest-ever DPC post. For those of you still awake, I hope it was somewhat interesting. :)

Did I say he had to love America? Was his swipe poetic?

I just requested that we not get into it in this thread. Shrug.

Hey, Raish! You're on the wrong side of the road!!

Ha! I think it's okay to poke a little fun at other countries. We sure do at Canada and France, but don't hate on anybody. Or, if you're going to hate somebody, hate George Bush...most people do!

Bush's approval rating = %29

P.S. I don't blame him for all of our problems, I just think he's an idiot :)

Sigh... I so hate politics. I'm just weird that way.

But I do have to throw in my two cents worth here, seeing as I am Team Suck's uniformed representative. If a person volunteers to work for the United States (or any other country, for that matter) Armed Forces, one should look carefully at those last two words. Armed. Forces. They kinda signify that yeah, you may end up using arms, using force, and having either or both used against you. That's the deal. The vast majority do understand this and accept it. As with any large group of people, you will have those that don't or change their mind when push comes to shove. That's normal, but they do get the most air time.

Do I agree with my country's politics? Does it really matter? I'll vote my political choices as I see fit and I voluntarily chose the profession I'm in. And yes, it is possible to serve in uniform and not be a Republican (referencing US service, of course.)

And Jeff, I've been to that city. :-) Kelli, she may not have to go to Iraq, but the people in Columbia who run drugs are not generally nice people. They are indeed armed and will use force.

And that's all I'll say about that.

I turned scores back on, everything is between 5.0 and 5.8. No entries for any upcoming challenges at the moment, and unless I shoot something tomorrow, I'll probably be sittin' out for a week.
