Oh! Really? It's just one fixed position? On mine, there are all kinds of adjustments. Each has a knob you can tighten to lock the position in, but by loosening it, the head swings freely on its axis.

Maybe that's why I wasn't understanding!

completely off topic, but if you want to see some great work, in a very dark vein, visit Louis's page. hooo-eee, can the boy snap some good pics!

Some of us have been visiting Louis' page for a long time now. He's known as The Master of Light from the 30 Day SP thread last time, but he's also marvelous at imagery - not just images.

Don, you're beginning to scare me...

I'm happy with this. I just hope it can stay this high.

BTW: My Best Of picture is not in my profile but there is one quite similar in there. Should I hide that one?

My black&white is rising ever so slowly, but my first comment was a really nice one from Louis.

oh wow:) almost 600 best of pictures...
it will take ages to go through all of them especially since they all should be excellent.

Maybe my 2006 Song entry isn't so awful after all - I got a posthumous comment, which always makes my day. No poem, though :-(

If you want to see an interesting (and in my opinion very good) photo with panned motion, check out Deb's photo of birds in flight.

Deb, hope you don't mind me pulling this one out to show!
01/11/2007 04:08:23 PM · #810
I don't mind at all. That happens to be one of which I'm quite proud, and yes, that's something you can do with panned motion, even when you aren't planning on it. :-)

Sorry but Deb's photograph is a good photograph and a great example of motion blur but it's not classic motion panning.

SHITE! I suck even at knowing how these contests work. Needless to say, I've never tried motion panning. Should be ahem - interesting - to say the least.

Oh, PLEASE!

The fact that she's elegantly, annoyingly, gorgeous doesn't hurt!....8>)

Shades of the ethereal look of Catherine Deneuve.....

Keep it up, kid, you're goin' places!

And just think, you don't have to pay a photographer!....8>)

Mary is right. Even though it is panned (you can see that in the background), the "subjects" (ie the birds) are not in focus. I didn't pan fast enough, essentially, to follow any of them and the silly things were flapping their wings and stuff so there's motion blur from that too.

For the challenge, you'll want to try to get your "subject" or at least part of it in focus, I'd think. That said, if I were to get another shot like the one Catherine pointed out, I'd probably enter it anyway. :-)

Well, I have a shot for Best Of 2006 but I don't have any idea for the three new challenges yet. I'm not sure I'm going to try motion panning. I've never done that before. I know, there has to be a first time.

I've been thinking about Match but I have to come up with an idea. Why is that always the hard part?

silverfox, I looked at your site. Very nice job. I was wondering where your user name came from? That explains it.

nikonjeb, what's the latest on your killer score?

I have a question. Has anyone used manual focus lenses on their DSLR. If you have:

Are you happy with them?

Is there anything special to watch out for?

How do you deal with exposure since there is no metering? At least on the film cameras their was a meter.

Glad you asked.....that way I don't feel quite so much like I'm tooting my own horn.

I just noticed an anomaly in my profile. My Free Study XVI shot (the green parrot) has had 768 views (post-challenge). The next highest of all my photos on DPC, the blurry brown ribbon winner, has had only 298. What do you suppose this means?

Are you talking about the manual setting on your camera or using a lens set on manual?

I'm talking about a lens from a film camera that has no autofocus features. I've heard they can work on DSLR's. From what I understand, you have to set the switch to manual and the mode to manual and they can be used.

Your light meter is in your camera not in the lens.

The only difference is you will have to adjust your focus manually by eyesight and by usually turning a ring on the lens.

Test it.

I have been too busy to be very active for the last week or so. Didn't get to vote on Fences or Centered, and while I checked in at least once a day I didn't get to follow this thread as often as normal.

I am currently in Procrastination with a 5.2, and have entries in Best of 2006, the January Free Study, and Match. I like all these shots, so am meeting my DPC goal, but I don't think any of them are really DPC-ish so probably won't score well.

Hope 2007 has been off to a good start for all fellow suckees.

I have an entry in best of 2006. I went with one that I hadn't processed before and looked original, rather than one in my portfolio that might have scored better. But of course, I can never predict how things are going to score anyway! For Song Titles, I checked Critique Club for the first time ever, because I worked hard on it and wanted to know why it wouldn't score well, but it is scoring well!
