I think transparent voting, that is, displaying the votes of the voters, would help, because
- voters would become better judges, because of the responsibility of the displayed vote, that is the voter would have to justify the 1s and 2s to a winning photo, or 9s and 10s to a loosing photo;
- would facilitate getting rid of the trolls, since the Site Rulers would be able to track down those who give only 1s or 10s;
- would result into increase of the number of comments, because people will ask why that particular vote.
On the negative side, I think people would vote less. But, then, I guess, this site would get quite a lot in voting quality vs. quantity. |

I find this to be an original and unique suggestion which simply can not be argued with. I certanly hope it is implemented post haste. |

Trolls votes are already weeded out, search the forums before you post on changing the site rules.
Anything else for questions is fine, but these rules and voting threads get sooooooo old.

But how could anyone object?
Just to take this chance to beat my own drum a bit. I still think profiles should include a users anomalised voting distribution curve (in the same way that a photo has). This would maintain voter secrecy, but still make it transparent if they are complete plonkers. The avg vote given however is indicative.

Doesn't follow. People seeing your vote wouldn't increase or decrease your ability to "judge" the photos. Perhaps drive some to normalize their vote but that wouldn't make them better judges.

The "Site Rulers" already have the ability to track down votes.

Just because people ask why doesn't mean they'll get an answer.

This assumes there's a lack of quality voting to begin with. Something I don't think exists. I do agree that it might reduce the number of votes though. |

Limited, if any value on the up side and great potential for negativity on the down side. |

Anyone who gets tired of being called out and told their opinion is wrong, for one... |

I think it's bad enough if you get a PM during a challenge regarding someone not agreeing with your comment, let alone being witch hunted after a challenge for giving a low score. Leave it as is!

Apologizing to everyone for wasting their time while beating a dead horse, I must add that I have been experimenting with this idea, since I show to the people how much I vote. The response was good, in the sense that I got some PMs, but I guess that´s why I am here, to tell people what I think about their photo and start a discussion about it. Otherwise, why wasting time in this site if I shy away from talking to them?
The thing I miss in the current system is the votes of some people I respect and for whose votes I care. I find PMing them in bad taste, because I am not a fan of PMs. |

If someone cares to tell me what vote they gave me AND WHY, I appreciate that, but if they choose to keep it private, I respect that right.
I also don't feel merely getting a number for a comment is helpful to me because I don't know what the voter liked or disliked about the picture. I learn nothing to help me improve. |

If anybody wants to know how I voted on their picture, they can certainly pm me after the challenge and I would be happy to share. Our votes are kept in the archive, so we can refer back to them and we can even put our voting order as a preference when we want to review a challenge. To post votes by voter seems a bit non productive because I don't think most people would look to see, and then they wouldn't really remember anyway. Besides, posting how I voted publicly would most likely turn me away from voting. We definitely don't need that happening. It is hard enough to get people to vote at all, let alone add another factor to deter us. |

Interesting point of view. I kind of like being compared to pond scum. At least I would get a reaction when others looked at me. Of course it would be "That is soooo gross" but the emotion cannot be denied.Originally posted by fotomann_forever: |
I've noticed an infestation here. Everywhere I look, in fact. Nothing but undeveloped, unevolved, barely conscious pond scum, totally convinced of their own superiority as they scurry about their short, pointless lives

No, no, no... wasn't calling you pond sum, it's just my general signature...
but... the yawn was just an indicator of how I feel about the whole "change the voting" thing that keeps popping up. It works now and SC and the admins do well at catching trolls and cheaters.
Transparent voting would just cause more drama.

I usually stay far away from threads like this but its hard to bite my tongue some times, so here it goes:
I know its impossible to please 100% of the people 100% of the time and if someone gives me a low vote on one of my pics thats their right and theres not much I can do about it and the way I see it, life is way to short to get all upset over someones opinion on one of my photos that I may or may not like.
I have to chuckle sometimes where Ive seen someone do pretty good in a challenge with mostly 5+ score and then get one or two 1's and they quickly forget about the rest of the scores and go off on a tangent on the couple 1's they got.
Im sorry I just find it quite funny entertaining sometimes and usually think to myself "LIGHTEN UP!! these challenges are here for FUN!!"
my $0.02
