Ah, I only checked apple.com 3 hours ago and it wasn't updated. So they must have just posted that. |
There's a new "iPhone" tab on top of the Apple site. I don't hink you can order it yet. Isn't expected to be available until June.

I understand, but eventually no one wants to be carrying around 10 billion devices. A unified, simple, intuitive piece is ideal...we are getting there... |

Most people don't want to carry 10 billion devices. Others, like me, don't want to carry any. |

Now Cisco are suing Apple over the name;

I hope Cisco lose. ;-) |

So far, I absolutely LOOOOOOOOVE what it's done to my Apple stock :) :) :)
If only I had a lot more of it! |

Why? If they had the name first, then Apple is taking advantage of its size and momentum to steamroll Cisco. Trademark infrigement isn't so far off from copyright infringement, and I think that's something to which pretty much everyone here can relate.

Yea. But what a waste of a cool name like 'iPhone' if all they use it for is a boring old internet phone. Something as lovely as Apple's iPhone needs a good name to go with it. :p
Not to worry, they'll probably settle out of court for a few billion dollars. That was probably Cisco's intention all along (in fact, it wasn't Cisco's trademark, but the trademark of a company which Cisco had bought)
It reminds me a bit of the gmail thing in the UK - 'gmail' was registered there as a trademark by someone else. So if you create a gmail account from a UK ip address, it's actually called 'googlemail' ... yourname@googlemail.com just doesn't have the same ring to it. |

Why should Cisco lose? Originally posted by ...from your link: Cisco, which has owned the trademark since 2000, said it thought Apple would agree to a final document and public statement regarding the trademark. |
It also says Cisco employed the trademark 3 weeks ago after putting out their own phone...sounds to me like Apple is in the wrong and should have to finished the negotiations before releasing the name.
But who knows, maybe we aren't getting all the info and Cisco decided to use the name only after Apple came to them asking permission for it, that way Apple would have to pay them for it and they make money...smart.

If Apple released this on Verizon so I could use EvDO I think it'd be the second to last nail in the coffin for me.
(I swear, Apple, why the !@#$% can't you upgrade to two buttons. And yeah before all the macfanatics chime in about buying multi-button mice. I only buy laptops these days. And I like track pads.)

nah....
a) iPhone name not worth billions for Apple
b) Cisco doesn't need the money
Cisco will likely give up the iPhone trademark for a few million dollar stipend and an agreement from Apple to utilize Cisco technologies (Cisco routers, routing software, etc) in various future designs likely both for the iPhone but largely for Apple's computers.
Think about it, Apple released iTV, they have their own wireless hubs, etc. Cisco "builds" & designs such things. It'd be much more lucrative for Cisco to trade the iPhone name (worth pittance to them) for a foot in the door of Apple's networking hardware/software business.
Cisco on logo on every Apple router. ;-) |

Yea, good point. I was talking with some friends earlier (in between drooling over the iPhone) about companies Apple should team up with;
Apple + Google = Apple design and hardware with Google blogging, online video, search engine and webmail.
Apple + Nintendo = Good games for the iPhone. Elbow in on the handheld games market
Apple + any camera company = Up the megapixel count in the iPhone to 5Mp, put in a decent lens and a flash, and put most of the P&S manufacturers out of business. |

Just what I was thinking.
I'd love to see the tech specs of that thing. Running OSX can't be an easy thing with all those visuals... still. the execution is excellent.
I still have this moral issue with spending hundreds on a device and then smushing it up against my greasy face... My PDA is my pocket computer. My calendar is in the garbage and my phone is my phone.
I take my phone everywhere, but not my PDA. However, my PDA is insanely excellent and has 220 ppi resolution... it was easy (ok, not that easy, but probably a lot easier than what I would need to do with OSX) for me to configure it and set it up for a multi-lingual chinese/spanish/french/english dictionary and input.
However my PDA also has a USB host port, so I can use keyboards AND an external HD.
I also am in the habit of dropping my phone now and again. I have been known to check it while riding my bicycle, and while driving my scooter at 80kph on the highway. If I drop it, no big deal. Wouldn't do that to an expensive PDA though... |

APPLE is GREAT at marketing but their products S-U-C-K.
Quite simply, the iPod has got to be one of the WORST personal music players ever made ! Also, waaaay too many restrictions !
-Durability...HA! Dont drop it more than a foot yikes! Also, if you plan on running and listening to tunes, make sure that sucker is tucked under your armpit (if you live in colder climates) or she doesn't work for long !
-No removable batteries (no backup battery ?) so they have to be recharged constantly which eventually results in shorter and shorter playing times... (how stoooooopid is that?)
-Proprietary Music files GAAAHHHHHHHH ! Just stomp on the friggin' thing right there !!
-No iPod to MAC/PC transfers (yet MAC to MAC, or MAC to PC is OK ? So you have to have the same files on your notebook AND your desktop ??whatever...
Alas,..the iPhone is going to be a piece of junk, just like the ipod. Proprietary products are always the same. They don't listen to the consumer assuming 'they' know what's best and fool you into thinking it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Haven't people learned anything from the iPod and iMac's shortcomings? The phone will no doubt be the same....
Naw, I think I'll spend my money, and time on my 'significant other' and treat her to a week-end getaway every other month instead.....
Just my .02 cents |

Grrrrrr.....SONY
Yeah, I just don't understand the DRM thing. Haven't these companies learned their lesson yet? SONY BMG is STILL settling their lawsuits in the "Rootkit" Music CD protection fiasco. They know they can't control DRM so they press hard on LOBBYIST'S to pass their assinine laws through congress instead. Scary stuff for people in the USA, Finland, and other countries that have accepted and implemented US copyright law for favorable TRADE policy.
ATB,
/Joe...

I guess I am a gadget head with multiple computers (Windows, Mac, TabletPC - you get the picture) and numerous PDAs and mobile phones (Palm, Treo, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry), as well as MP3 gear to boot. I have been "wired" for a long time and have been on the Net since 1981 when it was still DARPA. I even had one of the first CD-ROMS to ship with the APple SE-40!
But I am rebelling! I actually do not want an integrated device as I really do not want any devices at all! I am fed up to the back teeth with carrying two mobiles (private is a Treo and business is a BlackBerry), two laptops (honking great Dell C810 for work, Tablet PC for me) and a 40GB Creative MP3 player. I need a backpack on wheels to move the stuff around and that is without my camera, lenses and flashgun!!!
So, I now use a paper planner, reroute one phone to the other, have added more (probably corporate illegal) apps to my Dell and use a wee 80 GB portable drive to carry pictures and music. And I am a happy guy...
And then I saw the iPhone and my gadget lust has started to kick in again!
[Off to the Steve Wozniac clinic for gadget-aholics....] |

If I wanted people to be able to call me on my ipod (which I don't, why ruin a good thing?), I wouldn't consider a 4gb or an 8gb to be much of a replacement for my 40gb ipod, which would still mean needing multiple devices. I'm sure prices will drop eventually but at $600 for 8gb, I'd hate to think what a 40gb would cost. I do think it's kind of cool looking, though.
(Incidentally, while I agree that the no removeable battery thing is dumb and that sometimes iTunes is a pain in the rear, I've found my ipod to be nothing less than exceptional. And I'm not an Apple person.)
