Um, only the motorcyle guy is mine. The ribbon winning bicyclist was alexsaberi.

Here's another biker shot that isn't mine but that I love:

Silverfoxx

(I hope it's ok if I post it here? I'm just so exited I finally managed to make it in FLASH!!:)

Silverfoxx, your self-portraits are really beautiful. You have enough for a good art show. If you haven't done so already, you should find a gallery or framer who would hang your prints in large format. I really mean that, your work is awesome.

The gallery is very nice too, but some work is still needed. A little bit of music played when it first opened, then I just had static sounding, so I turned off the sound. Also, on my laptop, I had to scroll up and down a lot which is a little annoying. The beautiful photos made it was worth the effort though.

Motion Panning I

It is very difficult to do motion panning on a tripod-your camera has to move along with the subject.

Actually, Jeff, it WAS the motorcycle guy I meant. I like it better than the bicyclist photo.

Hi Team,

Can I go on a mini auto-rant here? (Wrong thread, I know, but I'm pretty sure you'll indulge me if I keep it short.)

Have any of you taken a shot that you really don't want to end up on front page of your profile? That's how I feel about my 2006 Songs entry. It is hanging around 5.8, so it might end up there.

Now, you may ask, why did I take a photo that I didn't want to end up on my front page? I just wanted to try a new technique and learn some new functions on my camera. I also wanted to try something really OOB. But I hate my own picture. Can't self DQ, either, or I'd be out for three weeks.

***It just went up another 10th***

Okay, all done. Thanks.

You're allowed to withdraw a certain number per year during voting. Have you checked the rules on that. I don't think that would count toward any DQ penalty.

thank you so much David and Julianne!
yesterday I printed 11 photos 6x8'' - not too big - but it cost me a fortune:) everyhting is so expensive in Norway. I guess I should wait a bit with printing them ALL:)
or I just have to write Bill Gates and ask him to help:)

Julianne, I'm sorry for big website, I made it on my big screen at home and there it looks perfect:)

edited to add:
and yeah, I'll be in sexes and motion.
I can't make up my mind about the best of 2006, the photo I want to enter has been in my profile for a while already and even has some faves. I don't think it's fair to enter it.

You are only allowed to self-DQ if you haven't had a DQ in the last 25 challenges, I think.

Svetlana - have you looked at using DPCPrints to print your work? You can upload it then order your own prints - the prices are very reasonable and since it's a worldwide community, I'm pretty sure they ship to anywhere, even Norway!

As for Best of - a LOT of people are entering things they've had in their portfolio, even those with favs. And this includes some of the top folks here at DPC. It'll be kind of a fun "Year in Review" - folks will remember them and think "Oh yeah! I love this one!" So I say go for it.

thank you Deb!
that's funny, we seem to be on the same wavelength still:)
I've just been to the dpc prints and was reading the faq there.
when I get home tonight I'll upload all my photos there:)!!
it will be fun.
and sure, I'll order my own prints from there.
what a great idea!

I think other people are using portfolio shots. There has been some discussion here about resizing them for 720 px and talk about keeping the original because of things like comments and favs on the old one. I am using one that I had in my portfolio for a short time. It has some comments. I hid that one and submitted another file for the challenge. That way it's not currently visible in my portfolio.

Silverfoxx, just hide your portfolio pic for now. On the portfolio manager page, click the little box under the photo and then look at the options at the bottom of the page and click on "hide selected."

My entry also has a favorite, and since it was recent, I just emailed the person to tell 'em why it was disappearing.

How do you move your camera along with the subject without running alongside something, which will blur even the subject? Sorry, not following you.

I didn't tell anybody. If they had it as a fav, they'll probably never know it's gone missing. But I suspect they'll recognize it in the challenge. I also suspect a lot of folks will just say "Hey, I've seen that before somewhere" and not remember whose shot it was. That's OK, too.

There will of course be some backlash by some voters who disagree with the idea of using something that's already been in a portfolio. I think they're in the minority, and with luck I was never on their radar screen so they never visited my portfolio.

Basically you choose your subject, focus on them, then just follow them and shoot - ideally this results in the subject being in focus and the background being blurred.

or you get stuff like this. this was the only vaguely usable one out of about 60 shots.

not that i am very good at it but the way i do it is just like i do a shotgun when bird hunting. i get the subject in the camera and turn my head and upper body at the same rate the subject is moving. and just like bird hunting you have to snap the shot before you stop moving. It does take some practice.

I agree, esp. the part about continuing to move even after pressing the shutter, but how is that different from using a tripod? Seems like the same motion if it's a subject that's moving horizontally like a biker.

Quiet_observation specifically said it's hard to do with a tripod and that you need to move the camera. I'm trying to understand why using a tripod makes it difficult.

thanks for the nice comment, jeff. i like the image too. the only problem is, to get it looking anywhere decent, i went WAY over basic editing...

Your body stays in one position to the side of the subject and you move the camera in the direction of the movement right to left, left to right. Or up to down or down to up or corner to corner whichever the direction of the movement is.

This takes a lot of practice.

Actually that is a good analogy.

I think maybe Azrifel's bike racing shots are a good example of panning with a tripod. He would know in advance where the movement was going, in which direction, etc, so he could set the shot up and wait for the beast to fly by.

It basically works for 3-way heads and not for balls.

I guess.

Okay, but for a horizontal movement, why isn't a tripod a good idea to move the camera from one side to the other? It is just not a big enough lateral movement? Sitting here swiveling my torso the way I did when I took the motorcycle shot, I can see that the camera moves sideways a good bit sideways as well as turning.

Panning example website. Shows an example of handheld panning.

If you use a tripod it would have to be one that you can turn quickly with.

My tripod is designed to not let the camera move.
