Uhhh, I promise I won't nominate myself again. But I ain't giving back my OOBIE, either. |
Your nomination was seconded a few times. Even a ballot was sent in from Nome-we had to defrost it though. |

Team Novice was getting tired of being so, um, *brownly* predictable. We're on a mission for that iambic pentameter :-) |

I need a site. I don't know what FOR, but I want one. :-)
My current entries are so, um, blah, that I've received about three comments on each, all the first day they started, then nada. Not a blip. I haven't actually turned the scores on - I watch the comments received number. I think it's safe to say that both are pretty much in the 5.0 range.

Hi Team,
Can I go on a mini auto-rant here? (Wrong thread, I know, but I'm pretty sure you'll indulge me if I keep it short.)
Have any of you taken a shot that you really don't want to end up on front page of your profile? That's how I feel about my 2006 Songs entry. It is hanging around 5.8, so it might end up there.
Now, you may ask, why did I take a photo that I didn't want to end up on my front page? I just wanted to try a new technique and learn some new functions on my camera. I also wanted to try something really OOB. But I hate my own picture. Can't self DQ, either, or I'd be out for three weeks.
***It just went up another 10th***
Okay, all done. Thanks.

Catherine, I've voted on everyone of them and I didn't see anything that I thought would be an embarassment for anyone. There were a couple that were a little "out there" but not bad. I wouldn't know what I voted for your pic but nobody got less than a 4. |

Well, not me. But I've made 7 out of 8 people laugh. :) Not bad for having misunderstood the point of the challenge and thereby handicapped myself.

Has anyone on TS tried motion panning? I'm excited to give it a go, but imagine I'm going to have a lot of extreme crap outtakes. If you did try, did you use tripod and swivel with long exposure, or move the camera alongside a moving object? |

I think you'll get best results with a suitable tripod. I've not done panning shots myself, but most of the articles I read seem to recommend a tripod and a twisty type motion. |

I moved the camera by hand, took dozens of takes:
I recommend a faster shutter speed than what I used!
p.s. I'm playing hookey today.

I've done it once and got this out of about 10 shots of various vehicles going by in a parade:
And yes, the other shots ranged from total crap to not nearly sharp enough but almost decent.
I just knelt down and turned my upper torso. That's also the technique used for the 2nd-place shot the last time this challenge came up:
I know what I'm going to shoot, and I plan to try it with both my tripod and swiveling my body. Fortunately, I have models who will do it several times, as opposed to waiting for random folks to come by. :)

Christian, you may hate it, but the vast majority of folks love your Monty Python pic. I, too, was raised on Monty Python's Flying Circus series (my mother has a very warped sense of humor and likes to share) so to me, that picture is simply priceless.
Catherine, I'm not all that fond of my baby birds, but gosh a lot of folks think they're cute. I shot it, showed it to a few folks at work who thought it was cute, found a Beatles title that fit, and entered it. Had I known it would be my highest scoring picture, I'd probably not have done that. But I live with it. You'll live with yours, and at 5.8, you'll get it off your top row in no time. I think I'm stuck with those birds for the rest of my DPC life.
And as for motion panning - and remember, this is a Team Suck member speaking, not a professional - I say just go out and hand hold the camera. Practice with cars at an intersection, but please do not step into the roadway to practice. Set the shutter speed such that you can get at least 1/30th of a second or lower. Track the car as it moves, then shoot at some point. Or shoot at lots of points, keeping the camera moving with the car as you go. Try it with relatively fast moving people if you can find some. Joggers, cyclists, kids on swings. It's actually a great deal of fun and yeah, you end up with lots of junk. On occasion, though, you get an accident like my birds I DO like (but which only scored mid-fives.) Mostly just go out and try it. I'll probably try it if I get a chance, though I can't guarantee I'll enter anything. |

levyj413 those are some very good photos you took using panned motion. The biker is fantastic! I think you'll give this competition a run for its money. |

Well. Always. *snort*
I'm trying to think, too, about what the final shot will look like assuming I manage to do a perfect pan.
For example, a coasting biker, a car, an airplane, or anything that keeps its same look as it moves will look absolutely tack sharp. Anything human will likely move a bit within the frame even when panning perfectly, but you might get very slight blurring.
Whereas a pedaling biker, a runner, or anything else with visibly moving parts will have some parts sharp and others blurred.
Both can look great; this is just a suggestion to think about what you want.
