He's an allergist, not a mathematician. ;-P

They had the same number of ribbons, but Alex won the tiebreaker with more reds.

hmmmmmm - keep it that way.

It is the numbers of ribbons that counts. not score

hehe

I think a late charge got me in at 16 pts. 1-1-1-1-2. :)

heh, ya Alex snuck by me on a technicality. The tiebreaker system had been set up long ago. It went number of blues and then reds and so on.

Alex did try to pass me by in points by reporting I had missed a 5th place finish. Unfortunately when I checked I found that I actually had marked it as a fourth place so he wound up losing a point. That's what he gets for questioning me...

On a serious note - Cheers for doing all the work keeping this upto date!

Well I have 13 points on that scale, I think...

1 blue, 1 red, 2 4ths = 5 + 4 + (2*2) = 13

FWIW, why not come up with a formula that takes into account average "rank" so it's not biased toward top 5 only (throwing away other "successes"). Calculate your average ranking for 2006. Maybe I'll start a new thread with a new formula :)

That's cool, but it's a different beast altogether. It identifies those who have very few poor finishes, especially those who only enter challenges when they think they have a winner. People like me (and many others) don't care about that at all; we'll enter anything just to have some fun, make off-the-wall and out-of-the-box entries. So I like ranking systems that track high finishes but don't penalize low ones :-)

It's possible I may have the worst votes-received average in this entire list on this thread :-)

Personally, I'd like to see it rank every image in the top 10, not just the top 5, since all of those receive stars.

I wouldn't mind doing it. However, I would be looking for a simple and easy process. Robert did talk to me about logging all Top 10 entries and I think that would be quite cool, but a lot of work. Not only am I not smart enough to write some code to do it automatically, but the # of people on the list would also likely be closer to 100 than 25.

Robert, you can PM me again if you want to proceed with that, but I bet it's going to be quite a bit of work.

Otherwise, if we do it again I'd probably do it the same as this year. In other words, there would be no official list until June or July at which point I would ask people to identify themselves as having won at least 3 ribbons and the list would start from there. It would also happen behind the scenes as there are always cries of elitism whenever one of these things gets going.

Slow DPC year year for me... only 2 ribbons and one 5th for 9 points....

The good news is that I don't have a desk job anymore and am a full-time photographer... and I'm going to see tons of fellow DPCers who I've come to admire and respect over the years at the Europe GTG!!! :-D

If anyone can create for us an Excel spreadsheet that could total these automatically, I wouldn't mind doing the populating of it after each challenge, no problem. 10 points for Blue, 1 point for 10th?

I beat you by a point, my friend (1 blue, 1 yellow, 1 4th = 10)

:)

Congrats on the career change ... i'm envious.

Thanks for such a nice post DrAchoo!
I think this should be an actual page that can be clicked on to view anytime.
What do you all think?? I vote yes!

pretty simple, it would look like this. Then just copy the formula down and keep adding names:

But what does top 10 mean in a challenge with 180 entries versus 800 entries? The same thing?

How about trying my alternate calculation here. It takes into account percentile, gives a small bonus for percent top 20 percentile entries, and includes all your top 20% entries in the calculation. I guess I could have only used top 10%, but this way more people have a score!

keep in mind - people would have to notify you in order to get on the list (perhaps reaching 20 points or something) - otherwise, your job would increase exponentially.

Simple to YOU maybe, but I don't know from any of that stuff :-) What I'd want it to do is be able to sort the names alphabetically, for entering scores, and then sort by total scores after entry is done. Plus I'd hope to be able to number the lines on the left to show the actual position; the way they are now, "1" is taken up by the headings... If you can e-mail me such a thing, along with instructions for use, I'd be happy :-)

Not really; it's just a matter of entering 10 pieces of data per challenge. With an alphabetized list it wouldn't be that hard. Just read the first page of each challenge results and transfer the data...

I saw that. It does look interesting, but it's a bit less cut-and-dried to do the data entry on that :-) I'm not sure I could handle it ;-)
