Allright, on another forum I hang around a lot there's the best of 2006 going on right now. I've entered this photo but I'm not getting ANY points. I still like it though so it's okey, but I am wondering what you guys think of the photo.
mind you... every year a landscape has won, so people just like that more I guess.

I like it. Mysterious lighting, pretty model. I'm not so keen on the background though, it looks a bit like a cut out and that kind of breaks the mood for me. |

I don't like the background either, and the lighting is harsh imo. + the eyes of the model look weird. There's also a black edge around the model's hat which shouldn't be there imo.

It's a nice portrait. But what it lacks is anything significant of interest to the viewer. The model is not engaging with the camera (i.e. the viewer); that's not always essential, but nothing else is really in there pulling the viewer into the picture.
Compare it to the wonderful portrait you did for your "AA Battery" challenge. There is so much going on in that picture that makes it interesting to the viewer. It has a vibrance that just makes the viewer want to look all over.
That's probably another reason why landscapes usually do so well - quite often there are many points of interest for the viewer to look at. They draw the viewer into a whole new location.
That is the challenge for a portrait photographer. To make the photo engaging enough to really bring the viewer in and make them take a look around.
Anyway, that's what a pro told me about my own portrait work, and it seems to make sense for this photo too. |

The photo is taken in an abandonned warehouse, the color of the background is a wall. You're right about the edge around the hat it is a way of editing I used for this picture. Believe me the model has 'weird' eyes. In this picture they seem to be green and blue, in other pictures I took of her they were very light blue, almost scary hahaha. Personally I loved the way she looked into the camera. But I guess it is not strong enough to grab the viewer.
Thnx for your opinions!
maybe I should've picked this one...

She has two different colored eyes? |

well that's the thing.
In one photo she has two coloured eyes, in another very lightblue (I'll post it in a second) and in the photo above they seem grey-ish.

Wow. That last one was really good. See what I mean about so much more going on in the pic? Immediately I'm asking what's she doing in the toilet? Is she hiding? Who's she looking out for?
It's just got so much more energy than that first one.
And the colours rock - I love the red. And I like the way the light falls neatly on her face. It really brings out her eyes, which are very pretty. In that second photo you posted, the eyes seem to get lost in the darkness.
And I like the zany diagonal lines of the tiles and wall - adds drama and movement to the whole pic.
Some of the background elements are distracting (like that plug on the wall) but those can be cloned out, and some of the top could be cropped off maybe.
But overall, I really love this pic. |

The second one is by far the best imo.

Never even occurred to me to think that question. And I of all people you'd think would go there. |

is that because of a mysterious fascination with toilets? ;-)

The one in the toilet is a great shot. |

Beautiful model. IMHO, the first shot is too stuffy. Her jaw line is jagged along the edge, the glare off the lips are all very distracting.
As for my fav of the 3 it is #2. She has a wonderful sex appeal and demands respect in your shot. The colors bring out her wonderful features.
Oh and unless she wears contacts, which I doubt, that is her real color. She really has 2 different colored eyes. My son more than myself, have times when our eyes are not the same shade. As a matter of fact the same colors of green and blue.
Great captures!!

I think she looks a bit like Angelina Jolie in that one :-)

She is gorgeous...
For me, the different coloured eyes are the best bit of the first image. I would have cropped MUCH tighter on her face so that the eyes were even more prominent.
The second image you posted is probably the better photograph, as the others have said. |
