I'm not a "brand" kinda person, but have you looked at the 30D vice the Rebel? And Canon's IS works very well for me (I have a problems holding anything still). |

That's an option of course. But one of the draws of the Nikon is missing from the Canon arsenal: the 18-200 VR. My only choice for 18-200 VR on the Canon is the new, not yet available or tested, Sigma 18-200 OS.
Of course, that presumes you can get a Nikon 18-200 VR ;)
(The Pentax is tempting to me versus the Canon or even the Nikon, of course, because all my lenses will have VR/AS. The money I save not buying expensive VR lenses can be used to buy better, faster lenses. But the jury is still out for me on the Pentax lenses.)

Sounds like a battle of the sexes entry to me :-)

Some good news : )
This goes back to the 1st page in this thread, and is an update on the problem with 42nd St Photo.
My broken S3 Pro is back from the shop repaired today.
More good news; 42nd St Photo refunded to my Pay Pal account the $1,500 US that I sent them.
Now I have to decide what to do. Do I upgrade my computer, or find a used S3 and upgrade the computer a little, or do I save more money and wait till the S5 comes out?
I hope that everyone gets the 18/200 VR thing sorted out to their satisfaction. I am very happy using 2 lenses to cover that range. I would like VR but I can't justify spending the extra to get it. Guess I'm an old school type too. I like the older Nikkor and Nikon Ai lenses that I have for feel and build quality, and the AF ED zooms for flexability while on the move.
In MF/ME mode when shooting with old lenses on the S3, the aperture ring is functional. I use on camera flash with a Micro Nikkor 55 Ai, but have to set the aperture according to range, or manually set the flash to less power. The Nikon SB80DX flash seems to work well with the manual lenses in auto mode. I have not used it enough to say exactly how well yet.
