Your all by yourself, I went up 2 whole points, currently at a 8.5 (kidding). Hee, it will be a long week if you watch every tenth of a point, every hour

I am seeing plenty of lovely subtle black and white shots with some grain even...just lovely work. There are probably 2 schools within the Black and White world..those who crave high contrast studio-type shots and those who are drawn to more subtle, in-depth, gritty pictures.
Well there are enough in this challenge of both!! |
I agree- I see three or maybe four 'schools of thought'. High contrast, classic studio portrait, candid and 'art'. What do you think? |

lol. now THAT'S why it's always a long week! Darn update button. ;), I'm actually down .30 from this morning which I guess isn't a TON. I'm not new at this I've seen much larger drops but when it's the difference between a 7 or not it seems to be more important to me. |

Actually ... I see two BLATENTLY colour shots in this challenge and 5 sepia-ish shots. Do those 5 meet the challenge?
ONE of the BLATENTLY colour shots ... I think might meet the challenge actually ... if not by spirit ... by the posted challenge criteria. I think it qualifies more than the sepia ones.
I have not decided how to vote on this one yet. I think it was brave (or misunderstood) but it is a good photo.
The other one ... I don't understand ... so ... can make no comment.
P.S. Routerguy ... WOW ... you are screaming! ... I cannot believe how hard it is to get a 5 in this challenge.

as a newbie, i'm learning a lot just by looking at the entries. some of the comments i have received have been helpful. my voting scale may seem harsh to some but i start with a 5 just for meeting the criteria of the challenge. the score then goes up or down depending on creativity and technicality. you may not like it but that's what happens with a 10-point scale. i would rarely give out anything above an 8 unless it was exceptional and warranted. frivolous high scores become useless if given out frequently. my photo for this challenge has 4.7 at the moment, which i'm pleased with for i am not a very good photographer.
frankly, from a newbie view, some people take this way too seriously. if you do this just for the points, then maybe you're doing it for the wrong reason. i'm off to newbieville!!

Dude, save the self-DQs for the really bad ones --- like an accidental 4.5. The rest is good for your humility.

Not as high as I hoped, but lightyears better than it started out ;-) I still like it, no matter how it does. So there!

Some people take this seriously enough to take the time to write and explain in some detail how they vote and why they are so harsh. Good thing you are not one of them. |

Then why are there so many 7's in his scores? Shouldn't they be 6's? |

Frankly ... I think you have some very good points. And ... how you score is a personal and subjective thing. And ... you are in the right place to be a better photographer ... I cannot believe the very serious professional photographers here that take the time to share their knowledge with newbies like me and you.
Hang in there ...

at the moment no, but maybe in time, i'll make time to add a few more comments. perhaps that is one of the draw backs to a site like this. so many entries, so little time.

I wish people would stop talking about self-DQ. It's not real. It's not an option. You've got what you've got. Live with it. |

That's not true. Go to the Help menu, then Contact Us. Send them a note explaining that you want to self-DQ. BUT... there can be consequences so read up on it in the FAQ's before you take this step.
