So I broke down and placed my order to join the wirless triggerers of the world. One Alien Bees transmitter and one receiver ($39 each). I also ordered a 36X36 softbox to replace my 4-year old 24X24..... NOW.......WHERE IS THAT BIG BROWN TRUCK?!:!?!?!?!
Wireless trigger critique to follow at SOME POINT this evening.... *looks out the window longinly*

Money well spent cindi, I think you will wonder how you did it without the wireless trigger. As for the brown truck, I've been waiting since OCTOBER for a softbox/umbrella ("Ed Pierce" model, I think it was) that is on backorder from Calumet photo... 'bout time for them to be making a DELIVERY here!
Hope all your stuff arrives soon, oh longing one :) |

Just curious, that's the "wireless" trigger that plugs into 110V outlets, right? (Not a big deal, cause Bees are plugged into the wall, too.) |

The Bee's power cord plugs into the receiver, receiver into strobe. So no extra wires to the wall.

Excellent set-up! The transmitter/reciever works perfectly - no more wired strobes for Cindi!! They took just a few minutes to set to my referred channel and sync them - and I'm off! :D
The new softbox is sweet too - I misspoke when I said it was 36X36 -- its actually 32X40 which seems HUGE compared to the 24X24 I've used for years.
<-------------- happy camper!
For the price, you can't go wrong with the AB wireless set.

Cindi I am getting ready to buy this tonight:
//www.alienbees.com/digi.html
Question I have is how long is the sync cord? Should I go ahead and buy 1 wireless transmitter and 1 receiver or spend that money on a softbox for now.
These lights will be used only for studio work for now.

Great starter set, James. They sync cord is 10' or so, plenty long enough to drag around the studio and trip over, I've done it for years. I would suggest you begin with a softbox, for a more flattering, less harsh light on skintones and save up for the transmitters as a treat later on.

About softboxes -- you can buy ANYONE's brand name.... but you will have to use an AB connector ring to connect them to the flash head... in the end, you save money buying AB softboxes (atleast I did). The first one I got was off-brand and a bargin in some bin... by the time I trashed their connector ring and ordered the AB one to fit, I hadn't saved a dime.

I know!! I've been waiting for something reliable and affordable and AB started selling these a couple of months ago. WELL worth the money. My reciever had a little glitch, I called Nashville and had an answer in seconds. Great customer service with ABs

Well I am thinking. Is two lights enough? Should be to start right?
I will go black, green , or yellow. Not pink though that is for sure.

I used a 2 light set for a couple of years. You CAN get by that way -- with a reflector.... the thing is, you're always choosing whether you need the 2nd light for fill or for background. I even tried house lamps & such for extra lighting until I got the 3rd AB. You will learn your craft well by struggling though; (atleast that's what I was told). You're way better off learning to master one or two lights first, then add others once you KNOW where you need them and why.
