I firmly believe at least some companies have a policy of rejecting at least some rebates automatically. Imagine the money they save if even 20% of customers don't challenge it? I would also guess it's more like 80% of people that don't challenge. It's already a huge hassle for a $10 or even $20 rebate.

Rebates should be banned - they're simply a trick to get people to make people think they are getting a better price. If you're looking at two competing products and one is $300 and the other is $200 (after $150 mail-in rebate), you buy the "$200" one and they shaft you on the rebate and you end up paying $50 MORE for what you wanted instead of $100 less!

REBATES ARE EVIL.

rant rant rant - gotta go. villages to burn, ya know...

I agree that they probably automatically reject a certain amount, knowing that many people will not follow up on them. Not me, of course.

Some rebates are indeed a good deal, but it seems like it's on the lower priced items where they really stand out. I have hardrives, flash memory, and other pc gear that simply a steal after rebate. I also have plenty of software "free after rebate", that is indeed free. But the rebates are only worth it if you follow the direction and follow through. I save copies of everything, and post due dates on my bulletin board.

another advantage for rebates (for the manufacturer and seller) is that they require the original upc. So, you cut it off the box and mail it away never to be seen again. Now, you have no upc to return to the store, if the situation arises.

If a rebate's over $100, I will request a "certificate of mailing" from the post office. (its $0.95 vs $2.40 for certified mail). And naturally keep copies of what you mail.

I'm in a email furry with Canon for my rebate on my 30D. It's been since October and I have $zero$ They are looking into it and I've now given them the numbers and information three times. It's very tiresome, aggravating and maddening.

I find the best way, when sending receipts, upc's etc. is to staple and or tape each item to the rebate coupon. Also place a return address label on the back of each item, so it will show it is yours.
When removing the upc codes, I score around the upc code, place some tape on the code label and remove just the top layer of the label. This helps with the bulk and weight of the envelope.

I don't buy anything with rebates anymore. I think they are a scam. I'd rather buy grey market with a lower price than fool around and maybe get my rebate.

Have to agree completely with Tamron - Fast - efficient. Unlike Canon and their outsourced insurance company, Tamron seem willing to pay the rebates.

I have a Canon rebate to send in soon.....

The whole thing should be illegal or taken off the retail price.

In NJ they are trying to pass a law that rebates must be redeemable in store. In otherwords, if the rebate is $200 the store would charge $200 less. No rebates to be filled out. I'm really hoping this goes through.

I like how CostCo rebates are all in store.

i had the same situation happen to me about a year ago. Bought 3 lenses and a couple of 580ex flashes. I waited 2 months and finally called the rebate company. Basically they hit me with the same scam. They claimed they never got my UPC codes. It was total BS. I contacted Canon corporate offices and explained to them my disatisfaction with the rebate company. I also explained that I would not buy any other Canon products and would spread the word about my experience with the Canon Rebate promo on every internet photography forum i could find.

Three days later Canon Corporate contacted me and said that my UPC codes had been "found". I recieved my rebate within 10 days.

Now I never send a rebate in without making copies of everything I send and I send it via certified mail.

Well, here is an update...

I got the little white postcard that said I needed to resubmit the UPCs...I mailed them a copy of the 2 UPCs (since THEY had the originals but blah blah blah...)

It shows on the Canon rebate site that the check for the rebate has been mailed Jan 25...

The amount is 250% of what I was expecting...we'll see what the actual value of the check is but if it really is 250% more than I expected, I am a VERY happy camper ;-)

I guess they felt the need to compensate for the grief they put me through...

I've given up on rebates. If it's something I plan to buy anyway and it happens to have a rebate as well, I'll send it in, but I never get my hopes up, with ANY company.
Instead, I'll watch for in-store or "instant" rebates to find what I want at a price I can afford.
What I can't understand is why the companies go to the expense of hiring rebate-handling services and suffer the subsequent loss of customers through dissatisfaction, when they could accomplish the same thing by giving well-advertised "price breaks".

I'm coming to the conclusion that rebates are nothing more than a statistical scam and should be made illegal. Force them to actually decrease prices to increase sales.
01/26/2007 07:09:08 PM · #42
I have always sent in for rebates and have always recieved them without issue. Nikon, Tamron and Costco are the most frequent and most recent and all without issue. But you do have to follow directions very carefully and meet all requirements. They do depend on the fact that many (if not most) will either never send them in or make a mistake when doing so.

Just my 2 cents.

Well,

All I can say is WoooHooo!

I got my rebate check in the mail and it was 250% MORE than I was expecting!! Alright! It is like I got the 28mm f/1.8 lens for nothing...they sure must have felt terrible about the mistake they made and compensated me for it!

Thank you, Canon.

Wow! I am not the only one!

I purchased my 5D last November along with a lens. Both were qualifying products . I sent in all proper documentation in order to double my rebate for a total of $670. I received a card in the mail yesterday from Canon stating my UPC was not valid, and they sent a check for the lens only- $35 (not doubled). All I am left with is an empty 5D box, and no copy of the UPC code that I cut out and mailed to them. Boy have I been cheated or what!

I am a young purchaser and was planning on purchasing L series lenses for the rest of my life. I am sold on Canon products, but this situation has me taken aback about the company.

I plan on calling the company ASAP, but I am overseas military in Japan and the time difference is causing me a delay today. I will keep you posted and THANK YOU for the advice and information in this discussion.

Call Canon instead. Calling Young America will only get you the run-around. Get hold of Canon customer service, they can light a fire under the rebate operator.

Those wondering why we have trouble with the rebate processor, Young America, should read this. It was posted recently over at DPReview, and it's an eye-opener.

My company (Alltel) recently started using a new comany and dropped Young America because of problems with them.
