these questions pops-up rather frequently. maybe someone can compile the questions and break them into YES/NO answers, and slowly lead the person to the "logical" answer? :) |

Some clever software developer could probably come up with a program that questions the user and comes up with a list of recommended cameras and equipment. |

If you like the ease of use and fluidity of your A70, then graduate to Nikon. That's what I did. |

won't work if you include lens specs AND slr... think about it a minute & you'll realize why
(psssst - they're interchangeable) ;) |

I would love to go to a camera store and pick up the camera and see how they feel. Unfortunely the nearest camera store is over two hours away. So my only options locally are Wal-Mart (idiots-r-us) and Office Max(don't even get me started). Both only carry an XT. So my options are VERY limited. Thanks to all for all the advice so far.

The 1Ds you link to is roughly five years old now. The current model is, roughly, twice as much. |

Canon 400D (UK) is small to most man hands. 20D is good. 400D is a great starter DSLR. 20D needs more work as a starter.
Kit lens is good as a starter with 400D/20D.
Sigma 70-300, get the APO DG model, much better and still a good price.
If you can't try them, you are at a serious disadvantage as it is all a matter of feel. Put a battery grip on either Canon and it changes to a different beast.
Nikon do great cameras, both in starter and advanced range.
As do Pentax, Olympus, Sigma, and now Sony.
It is a minefield out there, choose your marque, then check out reviews etc. Ask members here who have the camera you are interested in for their views. And lastly, Good Luck!! |

Personally, I'd choose the XT or 20D over the XTi.
Why, because the XT and 20D are both field tested by many photographers and are known to work for many, many actuations. I would lump the 30D into this class too, since it is only a modified 20D.
However, the XTi has some new tech on it that could cause problems and hasn't been real-world tested much yet. One of those technologies might be the sensor cleaner. Also, it's a new sensor compared to the XT, 20D and 30D.
Now, out of the 20D and XT, it's a choice you have to make. They both have the same sensor and produce very similar images. The 20D does have more "pro" features such as higher burst rate and larger buffer and a more rugged body.
Look to the left and you will see which one I chose, just yesterday.

I guess the XT is closer to the 300D, which was one of the best DSLRs ever!! |

Except for how the camera fits in the hands. The 300 is similar in size to the 10-20-30. The 350 and now 400 are much smaller, especilally in the space between the edge of the grip and the barrel of the lens more in the style of the Olympus than the classic Canon body.
While I do advocate getting the kit lens as part of the starter kit, it costs about $100 with the body, and is often the first lens replaced. So buy it for half the cost on EBay or Craig's list. |

Yep! But most people who buy are new to DSLR, and the kit lens does fill a space. There is always ebay for the kit lens, and they must be popular cos they do sell.
I liked the feel of the 300D, but not the 350 or 400. This is why I went for the 30D, but perhaps not the right move for me at this time. Scores using it have gone down, and down! |

That's right, I forgot about the Mark II (or I thought this was the one). I'll still hold out for the sub $1,000 FF camera Canon will put out. Maybe the 600D or 700D. I just hope my 10D will last me that long. |
