I thought this was a dud at first, but now I am starting to really like it. I was thinking perhaps some photoshoping or cropping could make it nicer. Any tips or ideas? This type of photography is new for me, but I am finding it fun and challenging to try and think outside my box, which is just taking photos of people.

Well, If it was me, I would crop it thus.
Cropped
... then pull out a little more detail and colour with blended levels as shown in the DPChallenge tutorial on fruitstands) ... a wee touch of Unsharp Mask and get something like this ...
Sunset 2
... the second part would be up to whether you wanted to keep it more mysterious or pull that little bit of extra blue and detail out of it, but now it's got the "rule of thirds" all OVER it and it's nicely balanced. All that extraneous busy stuff is bye bye :)
What do you think?
.... OH yeah! ... cloned out that lens flare first thing and threw the noise despeckler at the whole thing.

I like the color. No wthat you mad it smaller though, that flower on the right feels like it should not be there. It seems bigger and more intrusive. distracting from the main flower.
I love how you cropped out the flare. |

For what it's worth, you can recover quite a lot in shadow/highlight on this one. It would be less noisy if it were done from a full-size original.

I'll have to look at these when I get home tommorow. I am at work and the monitor here is ancient. Everything is too dark on it. That's the state for ya!
Thanks for playing with the photo, I cannot wait to get home tommorow and see what it really looks like. |

How about a crop like this?
Well, nevermind, I haven't been able to figure out how to attach my crop of your photo. I did place it on my portfolio page under workshop, if that helps.
Love those colors.

Get us the image number and click the icon that's second from the right (the mouseover for that icon says, "Insert thumbnail link to site image." Only put in the number. Nothing else. 6 digits. ;) |

JMI1- I couldn't find a workshop section in your portfolio.
I will check again when I get home and see if I can find it. |

That's because the WORKSHOP is a private section. You can't see images inside the workshop unless a link is posted to a specific image. |

Many many many thanks for the tutoring all! I'm trying it again.
Now I know what the workshop section is really for.

In Photoshop CS and higher, Image/Adjustments/Shadow-Highlight; it gives you a bunch of sliders to play with. You need to be very careful with it or you get really unnatural results, and if the shadows were really dark on the original you will build up a LOT of grain/noise if you push it too far.

Bear, Now that I am home, I can see your version much better. It is very nice. I am amazed at how much detail you were able to pull out of it. Thanks for the work.
I still cannot see the workshop image. I agree, it is nice to know why that section is there. |

Don't worry about the workshop one. I actually got it to show up, with a tutoring lesson from Ken, but then I decided I should take it off the site. Funny, I didn't even think it would impact the threads.
My cropping wasn't that good. I think you have a lot more experience and great information provided by others. Good luck. jeanne
And to make matters even more confusing, I just changed my log in name (formerly JMI1) to JerseyGenie.
