I got a new Fuji S9000 camera for Christmas. I love it. I now want to buy a telephoto lens for it. Does anyone have any suggestions on good brands of lenses to use. I am looking for 3 or 4x.
Thanks

I think you mean a telephoto converter. Most good lens manufacturers make them, but it depends on the thread size on your camera, your budget, and the amount of quality you are willing to sacrifice, as converters degrade image quality. 2x should be ok, but 3x or 4x will be trouble. Do a little searching on Google or Ebay, I'm sure you'll find something. You will require an adapter as I think they don't screw on directly to the threads on the front.

By far your best bet will be to buy the one that's made for you specific camera. Others may very well provide disappointing results. I agree that a 2x is the farthest you want to go, realistically. |

I had (still have, but don't use) an olympus TCON-17 teleconverter for my S602Z. It is regarded as one of the best teleconverters after the Olympus B300, better than the Raynox converters, and increases the view 1.7x. The photos became softer but were acceptable. But the increase in Chromatic Abberation was horrific. Used it two times.
IMO 2x is pushing it. 3x or 4x = cellphone quality.

Thanks for the advice. Should I instead buy a wide angle lens. The threads on the front my camera are 58mm.

Ok from extreme tele to wideangle is a big step.
What exactly is it that you want to do /achieve with your add-on lens?
Portraits, landscapes, sports, macro, family?

I bought these out of intrest more than anything
Ebay //cgi.ebay.com.au/Telephoto-Wide-Angle-Macro-Lens-for-Fuji-S9000-S9500_W0QQitemZ190066133611QQihZ009QQcategoryZ122984QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The wide angle has so much vengetting that you have to zoom in past the wide angle with out it.
The 2.5 x zoom has so much distortion its worthless.
So I would give ebay a miss, don't know about good one's :)

I think the Olympus I mentioned is the best option. But you need an extension tube and I am not sure if it works well with the S9000. Better ask at the dpreview.com Fuji Talk forum about that.
Also, when you use your camera at the max focal length with the converter added be sure to keep your shutterspeed up or use a tripod.

Hi, I have an S9500. I spoke to a Fuji rep during the week, I was told there is no teleconverter for the fixed lens models, but a Fuji wide angle lens is available. Look on Fuji.co.uk or .com, you should find it there.

I think you got as close as possible with a non-dslr camera. My experience with teleconverters is bad, as most of them will get you closer, but give you a lot of distortion (chromatic aberrations as purple fringe, haze, etc.)
I would take this camera as a transition towards a DSLR with a good tele lens.

The Nikon tele and wide adapters are being "dumped" on ebay and even on Amazon. They are available for around $20 or less. I bought the wide adapter to try on my Canon S1, it works very well and is a nice piece of glass. You do get a bit more CA but that can be corrected. I don't know if the tele works as well. The wide adapter I got was the WC-E68. It's a lot smaller than it looks in it's pictures and that's good (though a bit heavy).
I actually bought it in anticipation of buying another point and shoot. If I can get one at 28mm with a .68 conversion factor, I'll have a compact camera with a 19mm lens!

As far as I knew they haven't made lenses for our cameras yet

i used an olympus TCON-17 coupled with a step-down ring (58-55mm) on mine. Image quality is pretty good, but becareful to support the camera's lens barrel with your hands - the converter is rather heavy. |
