Is there such a thing as a program that will rename pictures automatically?

Here's my situation - I just got back from Europe with about 3,000 pictures (4 months worth) and now need to start sorting, editing, and printing them. While I was there, I stored them all on my iPod. I used windows camera viewer or whatever it's called. I tried putting all the pictures in different folders, named on the country I was in, but a few times I forgot, and they just went in the main folder 'europe'....But the thing is, whenever I transferred the pictures this way, windows always gave a picture the name 'picture 001.jpg' and the next 'picture 002.jpg'...

so the problem - I have a few pictures that I want to put in new folders, but there are already pictures there with that same name, so I am asked if I want to replace the file that already exists, and I really don't. I'd really just like to have the pictures named for what picture number they are...like the 5,643 picture I've taken with my camera will just be called 'picture 5643.jpg' So, is there a program that can do this??

Sorry for the jumble of nonsense...I'm just jetlagged and don't know how else to explain it :)

You can run a batch on them in Photoshop and just rename them sequentially that way, that is, if "Picture001" is really the first picture in your set and Windows didn't mix the order all up. Just go to file/automate/batch and enter the info there and the fields at the bottom should go something like: field 1 - "IMG_", field 2 - "xxxx" (where "xxxx" is the original number of the first original file), field 3: "extension".

I'm sure there's probably an easier way to do this, maybe with ACDeesee or a similar program, or maybe Photoshop Bridge might even be able to do this, I dunno, just thought of this off the top of my head. Good luck, hope that all made sense.

Edit: keep in mind though that the photos exif data was probably changed when imported through windows, making files look "unoriginal" and therefore not challenge elligible. Ask SC just to be sure though.
