I went out last night in the full moon and shot some frames up at the lake. This was my first real time using RAW, as well as one of my first attempts with HDR, and my second outing with my new Tokina wide angle - so basically, it was one giant experiment. Any comments or critiques are welcome - be brutal, folks!

Processing was simple - I adjusted to 3 RAW exposures and converted them to TIFFs, then used Photomatix to generate the HDR and Tone Mapped it. In PS7 I touched it with curves and a little selective color in the whites, then put a Gothic Glow layer overtop at 15%.

I'm pleased with how it came out, but I am afraid that it's too blue. Everything really did look blue, but I don't want it to be overdone.

That's one nice looking experiment... and I think it's just about the right shade of blue.

Doesn't look too blue, but it seems like something in there should be jet black. Even on a moonlit night there are still very dark areas around which enhance the glow of the moonlight by provding contrast. nice looking shot.

very nice shot. We have a wonderful near-full moon tonight, and crystal clear skies...but at -20 I'm not going out to take pics over the lake. uh-uh

Ice doesnt break at -20. But my camera battery might not work.

Thank you for the comments! I'm really glad to hear that the blue is okay, and I'll look into adding some black to deepen a few shadows and see how that looks.

Bump for the morning crowd.

Stunning.

Just one suggestion you may wish to try? Maybe you would like to crop out half of the foreground (the bottom eighth of the photo) and see if you like that balance better?

Added: Just to explain, I think it would put more emphasis on the water (which IS the title) and give better artistic balance. Instead of the areas of foreground, water, sky being medium medium big ... it would be small medium big.

It will be a choice between composition balance and footy prints.
